For most Kenyans, Alex Mwakideu’s voice is as familiar as the morning alarm. Smooth, confident, and bursting with humor, his tone became synonymous with Kenyan radio.
But what many don’t know is that Mwakideu’s broadcasting empire began by accident, with a simple voice-over gig that changed his life forever.
Mwakideu was born on March 6, 1980, and raised in Mombasa. He never dreamed of becoming a radio personality.
Growing up in a large, financially constrained family, young Alex shared a single room with siblings and navigated a modest childhood.
After high school, he did not take the conventional route to university due to a lack of funds.
How he began his Career
His early ambitions leaned toward aviation. But fate had other plans.

His first real encounter with the microphone came when a friend asked him to record a short advert.
The producers loved it, and soon after, Mwakideu was offered a slot at Baraka FM.
That one opportunity became the foundation of a two-decade career that has reshaped Kenya’s airwaves.
“I didn’t plan to be here. It just happened,” Mwakideu once said in an interview. “But when I got in, I gave it my all.”
Over the years, Mwakideu’s voice has echoed across several leading radio stations, including Baraka FM, Radio Maisha, and Milele FM, where he served as Head of Radio, and now Radio 47, owned by Cape Media.
Alex Mwakideu’s Success In the Radio Industry
At Radio Maisha, he teamed up with Jalang’o (Felix Odiwour), forming one of the most dynamic duos in Kenyan radio history.
Their chemistry, humor, and authenticity drew massive audiences. When Mwakideu later moved to Milele FM, he brought the same energy, turning the station into one of the top Swahili broadcasters in the country.
But his success wasn’t without challenges. In 2021, Mwakideu revealed that he had lost his mother, an emotional moment that tested his resilience.

“It was the hardest time of my life,” he said. “But I had to keep showing up on air, for the listeners, for my team.”
A family Man
Outside the studio, Mwakideu is a devoted family man and entrepreneur.
He is married to Mariam Mwemba, a journey that began with their courtship in 2002 and concluded with their wedding in 2014.
He owned a car wash business in Kitengela and often advocated for financial discipline and smart investment, lessons he’s learned through experience.
He has also spoken about his transition from employee to leader, describing how radio has evolved from mere entertainment to a tool for influence and community engagement.
“Radio is powerful,” he said in a past interview. “It can educate, inspire, and unite people. We must use it responsibly.”
Today, Alex Mwakideu stands as one of Kenya’s most influential radio personalities in Kenya, commanding a celebrity following on social media.
