Opposition Chief Raila Odinga has cancelled the Wednesday, July 12 rally at Kamukunji grounds.
The Azimio leader accused police officers of injuring protesters, adding that there are goons at Kamukunji grounds sponsored to destroy and vandalize property to blame the opposition party.
“Early this morning, our crew who had been sent to set up the stage at Kamukunji were attacked and their equipment damaged. Some were arrested. In line with the intelligence we received, armed goons have this afternoon descended on Kamukunji grounds and shot indiscriminately into the crowd. Police have used water cannons to disperse those peaceably assembled there.” Mr. Odinga said in a statement on Wednesday.
As such, he announced that Azimio will not hold the anticipated rally at Kamukunji grounds on Wednesday afternoon.
“In order to protect our people and avert more injury and loss of lives, we have taken the strategic decision not to proceed with the rally at Kamkunji this afternoon. In any case, the people have made the point.” He added.
Furthermore, the opposition chief mounted pressure on President William Ruto to repeal the Finance Act 2023.
“Kenyans understand that suffering will be the new normal if Ruto gets away with the Finance Act and the many other dictatorial political and policy decisions he is currently pursuing.
So, there is no moving on until Ruto comes out openly and agrees to repeal the Finance Act and embark on other measures to lower the cost of living,” Raila explained.
On the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the ODM leader revisited calls for a bipartisan approach.
“There is no moving on until Ruto comes out loud and clear on the need to have a bipartisan reconstitution of IEBC, until he commits to respects and stops interfering with other political parties,” Raila said.
