President William Ruto has finally announced his nominee for the Attorney General position.
According to a statement from the head of state, he has fronted Dorcas Odour to take over the position from Justin Muturi who was dismissed earlier in June 2024.
If approved by the National Assembly, Dorcas Agik Oduor will become Kenya’s first female Attorney-General.
“The presidential nominations as transmitted to Parliament pertain to the position of the Attorney-General and the existing vacancy at the rank of Cabinet Secretary.
“In that regard, it is notified that the Head of State and Government has nominated Ms. Dorcas Agik Oduor, SC, EBS, OGW, for appointment to the position of the Attorney-General of the Republic of Kenya,” the statement read in part.

Ruto Explains Why Dorcas Oduor is fit for the position
According to Ruto Dorcas qualifies for the position because of her vast legal experience spanning over thirty years of practice within the public sector.
“In her long and distinguished career as a jurist who has contributed immensely to the development of law in Kenya through litigation, draughtsman, and legal advisories,
“Senior Counsel Oduor has demonstrated unimpeachable Integrity, impressive professional competence and steadfast commitment to the rule of law,” added the statement.
Additionally, Ruto stated that the nominee was admitted to the bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1992.
She was attained her Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL. B) in 1990 and a postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law in 1991.
“The nominee is currently serving as Secretary of Public Prosecutions within the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions,” added the statement.
Earlier, former Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano who had been nominated to the position declined it.
Miano requested that the president to assigns her lighter duties after the nomination. Ruto then nominated her to the Tourism ministry as cabinet secretary.

Qualifications of An Attorney General
According to the Constitution of Kenya, the qualifications for the Attorney General are the same as the qualifications Chief Justice.
Both positions require at least fifteen years of experience as a superior court judge.
He or she should have at least fifteen years’ experience as a distinguished academic, judicial officer, legal practitioner or such experience in other relevant legal field.
Additionally, the Attorney General must have held these qualifications for an aggregate period of fifteen years.
