The National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) Kenya Party leader, Martha Karua, has responded to some Kenyans recommending her for the Attorney General position in President William Ruto’s cabinet.
In a response on Saturday, Karua affirmed that she has no intention of taking up the role in the Kenya Kwanza government. She clarified that she is not interested in filling the vacant position and becoming Kenya’s first female Attorney General.

The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) had also asked William Ruto to appoint a female Attorney General to fill the position to fulfill the constitution threshold of two-third gender rule.
Karua Quitting Azimio Coalition
On July 25, the rift in the opposition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party escalated after Martha Karua’s party formally expressed its intention to exit the formation.
The party’s Acting Secretary General, Asha Bashir, cited “prevailing political developments” as one of the reasons for the party’s imminent exit from the opposition political faction in a letter.

“Kindly take note that our stay in Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition is not tenable due to the prevailing political developments,” said the NARC-Kenya SG.
“As NARC Kenya by way of this letter, we are giving notice to exit the Coalition as stipulated in the exit clause (s) in the Coalition Agreement. This notice is effective from the date of this letter.”
Azimio Members Nominated to Cabinet
The decision came a day after President William Ruto nominated four members of the Azimio affiliate party Orange Democratic Party (ODM)to his Cabinet on Wednesday, July 24.
He nominated ODM Chair and Nominated MP John Mbadi to lead the Treasury ministry and appointed National Assembly Minority Leader and Ugunja MP James Opiyo Wandayi to oversee the Energy docket.
Additionally, he nominated former Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho to lead the Ministry of Mining and Blue Economy and former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya to head the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development.

These nominations caused divisions within the opposition, despite their previous strong assertions that they were not desperate to join the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Similarly, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other co-principals dismissed claims that they were warming up to President William Ruto’s administration, even as it emerged that they could not agree on the two slots still up for grabs in the government.
“I have not received any offer to become an Attorney General. The simple truth is that I am not interested. The Azimio coalition has not received any notice to show that ODM is pulling out. In fact, people are coming out in heaps,” said Musyoka.
