President William Ruto is facing criticism from Kenyans after his congratulatory message to English Premier League champions Arsenal sparked a wave of online backlash, with many accusing him of ignoring a deepening crisis at home.
In a post shared on his social media platforms in the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, the President praised Arsenal for what he described as a journey of āresilience, focus and relentless hard workā as the club secured the league title.
The message, accompanied by a photo from a past State House event when the English Premier League trophy toured Kenya, praised the clubās journey of resilience, focus, and hard work before congratulating the Gunners.
āIt has been quite an experience to follow Arsenal Football Clubās epic adventure, from times of struggle and crushing setback, to successive seasons of recovery and resurgence on their glorious path to the summit of the English Premier League,ā Ruto stated.
President Ruto is currently in Kazakhstan on a two-day State visit after attending an international forum in Azerbaijan.

However, the post quickly drew sharp reactions from Kenyans online, many of whom questioned the timing and tone of the message, coming at a moment when the country is grappling with rising fuel prices, increased electricity costs, and widespread protests.

They argued that the message appeared disconnected from the realities facing ordinary citizens, with several pointing out that the President had remained largely silent during ongoing demonstrations but was quick to comment on football.
Across social media platforms, users expressed frustration, with some saying the President had misplaced priorities.
A number of posts accused the Head of State of focusing on foreign matters while urgent domestic issues remain unresolved.
One user wrote that the country was ācollapsingā while leadership chose to celebrate overseas football, while another said the silence during protests contrasted sharply with the speed of communication when it came to Arsenalās victory.
āSir, we have our local clubs, the likes of Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards. Elevate our local league. Meanwhile, solve the fuel crisis. The economy is collapsing,ā replied KOwino to President Rutoās post.
Others went further, linking the post to broader concerns about the cost of living, with repeated references to rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of electricity tokens.
The protests, which have been reported in several parts of the country, have largely been driven by these economic pressures.
āIn other countries, Dr. Ruto should have returned to Nairobi immediately to address the situation,ā said another user.
Some commentators also questioned the emphasis on a foreign football club, arguing that local sports remain underdeveloped and receive little recognition from national leadership.
On his part, activist Boniface Mwangi, who is also a presidential hopeful, noted that police had killed twelve people with many others wounded, yet it did not matter to Ruto.
āThe cost of living is high and fuel is unaffordable. Instead of President Ruto consoling the families and addressing national issues, his priority is celebrating Arsenalās win?ā Said Mwangi.

The comparison between the attention given to Arsenal and the perceived neglect of Kenyaās own leagues became a recurring theme in the criticism.
Govt Response to Fuel Crisis
The government reached an interim deal with transport operators following two days of nationwide protests and a shutdown that paralyzed movement across major towns.
The strike was suspended for one week after talks, allowing matatus and other public service vehicles to resume operations.
Officials agreed to a temporary reduction of about Ksh10 per liter on diesel, but operators said this fell short of demands for deeper cuts.
They said the suspension would allow further negotiations on fuel pricing and sector concerns.
Despite the return of transport services, tensions remain high, with stakeholders warning the strike could resume if no lasting solution is reached within the agreed period.
Arsenal are the Champions
Mikel Arteta’s squad was crowned Premier League Champions with 82 points after 37 matches.
This was after Manchester City drew 1-1 with Bournemouth.
The world erupted in celebration of the Gunners’ long-awaited win, with several leaders unable to contain their joy.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame said the gunners deserved the crown.
“Congratulations to Arsenal, our Visit Rwanda partner, on being the Premier League champions after a hard-fought season! A well-deserved title!” He said. Kenya’s Health Minister, Aden Duale, joined his boss in celebrating the Gunners.Ā
āCongratulations to Arsenal on winning the 2025/26 English Premier League title, ending a remarkable 22-year wait. A season defined by grit, patience and consistency has deservedly paid off. A well-earned and historic triumph. Congratulations once again,ā said Duale.
