A multi-vehicle accident has occurred at the Kijabe-Kimende section of the Naivasha–Nakuru highway, causing traffic disruption along the highway on July 9.
Footage from the scene, as observed by the Kenya Times, captures the aftermath of the collision, with multiple vehicles visibly damaged along the highway.
Bystanders are seen making phone calls and recording videos while emergency responders attend to the scene.
Further, the accident has caused a buildup of traffic on the busy transport corridor linking Nairobi to Nakuru and western Kenya.
Naivasha-Nakuru Highway Crash
According to a witness at the scene, the accident occurred after a front tyre came off a lorry, causing the lorry to lose control and collide with other vehicles.
“This is another incident just past Kimende. Several vehicles have collided, including a lorry, a matatu from the Kasese Travelers, Cherangani Travelers, and lorries,” the witness explained.
The witness further noted that three lorries and two matatus were involved in the Kijabe-Kimende road accident.
Authorities had not released any official information regarding casualties, injuries, or the cause of the accident, with investigations into the crash expected.

Public Concern on Kijabe-Kimende Accident
Members of the public have called for the expansion of the Naivasha–Nakuru highway into a dual carriageway.
They argued that upgrading the road would reduce the risk of collisions and congestion, as well as improve traffic flow along the highway.
Moses Koech, a member of the public, explained that accidents along the Naivasha-Nakuru Highway are a reason for the residents’ request that the Rironi-Mau Summit Road be completed soon.
“That is why we are requiring that the Rironi-Mau Summit Road be completed ASAP; these accidents have become so rampant,” Moses Koech stated.
While others focused on the effect of the accident on the road, some have argued that despite some citizens not supporting President William Ruto, his road and infrastructural development is among the best developments that the country has experienced under his administration.

Areas Connected by the Nakuru-Naivasha Road
The Kijabe-Kimende section is part of the A104 Nairobi–Naivasha–Nakuru Highway transport corridors linking Nairobi with the Rift Valley, western Kenya, and neighboring countries through the Northern Corridor.
However, the Kijabe-Kimende stretch has historically been considered one of the more challenging sections of the highway due to steep descents and climbs.
Additionally, the road has a high volume of heavy trucks and buses that use the route, causing frequent traffic congestion.
In May 2026, major traffic disruptions were reported around the Kinale–Kimende area.
Following the challenges experienced along the transport corridor, the National Treasury announced a restructuring of the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit project financing model.
On July 9, the National Treasury stated that the government reviewed the original PPP arrangement after finding that changes in economic conditions were affecting the earlier arrangement.
Treasury officials also reported that the previous model could have exposed the government to substantial financial obligations, including a projected funding gap estimated at up to KSh200 billion within the first 15 years of the concession period.
