eSIM is a digital version of the traditional SIM card that allows mobile users to activate a network line without inserting a physical SIM into their phones.
In Kenya, many smartphone users are switching to newer devices that support eSIM, especially iPhones, Samsung Galaxy devices, and Google Pixel phones.
Safaricom introduced eSIM services in Kenya in 2021, allowing customers to convert their physical SIM cards into digital SIM profiles via QR code activation.
How Kenyans Can Change From Physical SIM to eSIM
To switch from a physical SIM card to an eSIM, customers must first confirm that their smartphone supports eSIM technology.
To check if device is compatible, users have to dial *#06# on their devices. If the phone displays an EID number, then it supports eSIM.

Once compatibility is confirmed, users are required to visit a Safaricom shop with:
- Their original national ID or passport
- The smartphone they want to activate
- Their active Safaricom line
At the shop, the customer pays KSh 150 for the SIM swap from a physical SIM to an eSIM.
After payment, Safaricom issues a QR code containing the customer’s mobile profile. The user scans the code via the phone’s mobile network settings, allowing the device to automatically download and install the Safaricom eSIM profile.
If a user is roaming, the need to send an email to [email protected] or [email protected]. Once vetted, the person pays for the eSIM QR code to be sent via email.
On iPhones, users go to:
Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM
On Android devices, the process varies slightly depending on the manufacturer, but usually follows:
Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile Network → Add eSIM
