In 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree allowing any foreign citizens, including Kenyans, to join the Russian military.
Since 2015, you do not need a Russian passport to join Russia’s military, as any citizenship will work for you.
Joining the Russian military as a foreigner is a complex process governed by specific laws and regulations.
Generally, foreign citizens can enlist in the Russian military under a contract, offering opportunities in various roles.
Salary Package for Kenyans Joining the Russian Military
Foreign recruits are paid on the same scale as Russian contract soldiers. According to official figures and regional enlistment offers, a private earns a base salary of approximately (200,000–210,000 rubles per month) Ksh326,000–Ksh342,000 at current exchange rates.
In addition, many regions provide one-time sign-up bonuses ranging from (400,000 to 1.9 million rubles), about Ksh652,000 to Ksh3.1 million.
Depending on location and unit type, Moscow and some high-priority areas offer bonuses at the upper end of this range.

Soldiers and their families receive free medical care, government-subsidised housing near their base, and, after three years of service, eligibility for a 20-year military mortgage programme that can lead to owning an apartment in Russia.
How to Join the Russian Military
Prospective recruits must travel to Russia and report to a local military enlistment office, known as a voenkomat, in any city.
This application must include copies of all required documents, such as a passport, a residency permit, and any relevant educational or professional certifications.
There, they apply, present the required documents, and undergo several screening stages, including a comprehensive medical examination, psychological evaluations, and a Russian language test.
After the initial application is reviewed, candidates will be invited for preliminary interviews and assessments.
If a candidate completes all the previous stages, they will be offered a military service contract.
This contract outlines the terms and conditions of service, including the duration of the contract, the specific role, salary, and benefits.

Eligibility and Requirements
The Russian Armed Forces accept both men and women from any country, but several conditions apply. Applicants must:
- Be aged between 18 and 30.
- Speak Russian fluently. Passing a language test is mandatory to ensure recruits can follow commands and communicate effectively.
- Have a clean criminal record. Those with past convictions or ongoing investigations are not eligible.
- Meet medical and fitness standards. The health check is rigorous, covering cardiovascular health, neurological function, and physical endurance.
Women may serve but are typically placed in administrative roles, medical units, or headquarters support.
Regardless of assignment, they complete basic military training in shooting, tactics, and physical drills.
Serving in the Russian military does not automatically confer citizenship, but it provides a fast track.
After five years of honourable service, foreign soldiers can apply for Russian citizenship, and the process is significantly expedited compared to civilian applicants.
