At least five people died after an accident involving a 14-seater matatu and a trailer at Londiani area along the Nakuru-Kericho Highway.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the 14-seater matatu rammed into the trailer and hence the accident and injuries from the impact.
Casualties from the scene were rushed to the Molo Sub County Hospital in Nakuru County and the Londiani Sub County Hospital for treatment.
Police officers also arrived in the area to help clear the scene in collaboration with a team from the Nakuru County Fire Brigade.
In its statement, Kenya Redcross expressed gratitude to the Nakuru County Government for its swift response.
In addition, the organization vowed to provide casualties with psychological support.
“Mass Casualty Incident Alert: A 14-seater matatu has reportedly collided with a trailer at Londiani along the Nakuru-Kericho Highway,” a statement from the Red Cross read in the wee hours of December 2.
The cause of the accident was, however, was yet to be established.
Notably, the Londiani area has been known to be a hotspot for accidents with several deadly accidents happening in the past.

In July- for instance, over 50 people were killed in an accident involving seven vehicles.
A truck, according to police reports, lost control before ramming into matatus picking passengers by the roadside and passengers in the area.

Ahead of the 2023 festive season, the National Transport and Transport Agency (NTSA) had raised an alarm over the increasing number of minor and serious injuries from road accidents.
Alarm over increasing accidents
Speaking during the day for the remembrance of road accident events, NTSA announced plans to install cameras along major highways.
The cameras, as per NTSA, would be implemented in conjunction with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) in ab id to curb over speeding on Kenyan roads.

According to official data from NTSA, 2,124 lives were lost through road accidents in the period between January 2023 and June.
On Thursday, November 30, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced a crackdown targeting private vehicles which had been operating as Public Service Vehicles (PSV).
The plan was also meant to enhance safety on Kenyan roads, according to CS Murkomen.
