The Nairobi County government in conjunction with the Kenya Railways Authority has announced closure of some matatu stages within the Central Business District – CBD for 12 hours.
In a notice on Friday, September 22, the county government stated that it intended to carry out a Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) at the Railways Matatu Terminus and the Easy Coach Park.
Further, the notice indicated that the activity will be part of the planning process and design of the new Nairobi Central Railway Station.
Moreover, the new railway station is part of the Nairobi Railway City project.
“We intend to carry out a comprehensive Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) Utility Survey at the Railways Matatu Terminus and the Easy Coach Park.
“This is part of the Design and planning process of the New Nairobi Central Railway Station and Public Realm. A component of the Nairobi Railway City project,” the notice read in part.
Date and Time of Closure
Further, the Nairobi City County alerted the residents of Nairobi and the public that the railway terminus will be temporarily closed from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.
The closure will take place on Sunday, September 24, 2023, according to the notice.

Alternative Pick Up Points for Matatus
Because of the disruption and temporary closure of matatu pick up points, the authority issues alternative pickup points and drop off points for Public Service Vehicles (PSV) and the general public.
Ngong Road and Valley Road Matatus. The pickup points and drop off points for matatus that operate to and from Ngong Road and Valley Road were advised to use the Green Park terminus on Sunday.
Lang’ata road and Mombasa Road Matatus. The pickup points and drop off points for matatus operating to and from Langata Road and Mombasa Road were advised to use the Agip Bus Bay in front of Posta City Square
Additionally, they were also given an alternative pick up and drop off point along the street between Neno Evangelism church and Shell Petrol Station, off Haile Selassie Avenue.

The Nairobi Railway City Project
The project is one of the government’s solutions to decongesting the city and will be executed through a Public and Private partnership between the government of Kenya and a United Kingdom company.
Moreover, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta initiated the project to expand the Central Business District (CBD) and attract businessmen and entrepreneurs into the city.
Further, the project, seeks to transform Kenya’s railway system, and is estimated to cost Ksh30 billion.
