Several people have been trapped under a building after it collapsed in Mathare North area 2.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, unknown number of individuals were trapped under the rubble and efforts to rescue them are ongoing.
Images seen online shows the fallen storey building which was still under demolition by the government while residents of the area stood at a safe distance from the scene.
However, it was not yet clear whether the demolitions were taking place while the victims were still inside the building.
Four casualties who were trapped under the rabble have been rescued and transported to a nearby hospital. On the other hand, three individuals have sustained critical injuries, while one other person has sustained minor injuries.
“A building undergoing demolition has collapsed in the Mathare North area 2. There are fears that multiple individuals may be trapped beneath the rubble. Our rescue team has been dispatched,” stated Red Cross.
Mathare was one of the most affected areas in Nairobi by floods as a result of heavy rainfall, with thousands of families losing their loved ones and property.

Collapse of Bungoma Building
The incident is the second of its kind in a period of one week following the collapse of a separate story building under demolition on May 10.
According to a police report, a 17-year-old boy identified as Alvin Nakitare together with 20-year-old Geoffrey Musungu lost their lives in the tragic event.
They were reported to have entered the building in search of scrap metal to sell.
The building, which was partially demolished by the Bungoma County government to make way for the expansion and renovation of the Masinde Muliro Stadium.
Further, the incident raised questions and concerns about the safety protocols put in place during such construction projects.

Five-Storey Uthiru Incident
Earlier on May 7, a building in Uthiru area in Nairobi collapsed late in the evening while some of the residents were inside the building.
Kenya Red Cross reported that the Espsom Apartments located near the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) collapsed on around 8: 30p.m.
However, at around 11:50pm, Nairobi County officials announced that all the residents of the collapsed building had been accounted for.
Nairobi County Chief Officer of Disaster Management, Bramwel Simiyu, said four residents who had earlier been missing had been found adding that there were no casualties.
“All 34 residents of the collapsed building in Nairobi’s Mountain View Ward have been located and are safe. There are no casualties,” read the update.
