One person has been confirmed dead after a four-storey building under construction in Kirinyaga County collapsed amid the ongoing heavy rains.
At the same time, two more people have sustained injuries from the incident that happened in the Karia area, Kirinyaga Central.

According to reports, a woman who was asleep in a house adjacent to the collapsed building died after the rubbles of the storeyed building fell on her house. Photos shared from the scene showed the woman’s house partially damaged by the rubbles of the collapsed building.
According to locals who spoke to the media, the deceased was middle-aged woman. At the time the building collapsed on Wednesday morning, May 1, the woman was asleep with her two children inside their house.

Residents of the village in Kirinyaga Central flocked the homestead of the deceased as locals and authorities assessed the damage caused by the collapsed building. However, they only managed to rescue the two children who were sleeping in a different room.
No official statement was issued by the Kirinyaga County government and other relevant authorities as to what could have caused the incident by the time of this publication.

Kirinyaga is among the counties adversely affected by the ongoing heavy rains and flooding in Kenya since the onset of the March, April and May (MAM) rains.
In the neighboring Mwea Constituency, over 600 families were displaced by floods after the River Thiba which traverses the county burst its banks affecting a sizeable area.
Heavy rains have continued to wreak havoc across the country with various government agencies issuing advisories to members of the public.

On Tuesday, April 30, President William Ruto convened a special cabinet meeting to discuss the effects of the floods and a strategy to mitigate the effects of the enhanced rainfall pounding the country.
Among the resolutions made in the conference include one requiring residents in areas known prone to floods and other effects including mudslides and landslides to move within 48 hours.
The directive came after more than 45 people died after flash floods swept away villages in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County on the night of Sunday, April 28.
