Southern Bypass Thief Causing Accidents to Rob Families Exposed

A man notorious for causing accidents along the Southern Bypass and stealing from families plying the route has been exposed. 

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has in a statement noted that the suspect, Martin Otieno, is in custody. 

Martin was on a striking spree along the bypass over the New Year when officers from the DCI Lang’ata and DCI Dagoretti arrested him. 

According to the police report, the suspect’s strategy involved positioning a massive stone to obstruct traffic. 

“In response to reports of a string of robbery incidents plaguing motorists on the Southern Bypass in Nairobi, a dynamic initiative spearheaded by the Regional Criminal Investigations Officer,

“This coordinated effort led to the swift arrest of Martin Otieno, who brazenly attempted to rob unsuspecting drivers yesterday along this notorious stretch of road,” the statement from DCI read in part.

How DCI Nabbed the Southern Bypass Thief

The suspect launched a stone on the road that a Volkswagen plying the route crashed into. When officers heard the loud bang, they rushed to the scene to intervene.

Martin had rushed to the scene to steal from the family in the vehicle and run into a nearby bush. 

However, officers pursued him and arrested him. He is set to be processed for arraignment on Monday, January 6, 2025.

“While on patrol, officers were alerted by a loud crash. Rushing to the scene, they discovered that a Volkswagen, bearing the registration KYW 690, had collided with the stone as it drove toward Ngong Road.

“A family inside the vehicle recounted the terrifying ordeal. After hitting the stone, the suspect emerged from a nearby thicket, where he immediately confronted them robbing them of their valuables,” added the statement.
