Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has declared a vacant seat following the expulsion of nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party membership.
UDA had in a statement on Monday said Orwoba no longer enjoys any privileges accorded to party members, nor is she authorised to represent or act on behalf of the party in any capacity.
The nominated senator was accused of contravening the party’s Code of Conduct.
In a special gazette on May 21, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi declared Orwoba’s seat vacant.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that pursuant to Article 101 (2) of the Constitution of Kenya, a seat of the Member of the Senate elected under Article 98 (1) (b) of the Constitution, held by Senator Gloria Orwoba, has become vacant with effect from the 21st May, 2025,” it reads.

“Pursuant to Article 29 of the UDA Party Constitution, and having exhaustively deliberated on the matters before it, the Party’s Disciplinary Committee has resolved that Senator Gloria Orwoba be expelled from the membership of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party with immediate effect,” the statement reads.
During its May 19, 2025, meeting, UDA Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) adopted and ratified the Disciplinary Committee’s decision to expel the nominated Senator.
High Court application dismissed
Following the expulsion, Orwoba’s attempt to challenge it was dismissed by the High Court in Nairobi as Justice Lawrence Mugambi ruled that the application was incompetent, citing procedural irregularities.

The judge while rejecting the application noted that the nominated Senator had introduced new parties to the case without the court’s permission.
“The application is incompetent and is rejected,” Justice Mugambi ruled on May 20.
The judge further maintained previous court directions, signalling that Orwoba’s challenge had failed at the preliminary stage.
UDA said that Orwoba was found guilty of several counts of misconduct, including making public statements that harmed the party’s image and repeatedly failing to respond to disciplinary charges.
