A member of American YouTube streamer Darren “IShowSpeed” Watkins Jr.’s production team was hospitalised in Kenya after sustaining an injury during the streamer’s high-profile Nairobi livestream.

The crew member known online as Slipperrz, or Slipz, who handles production and camerawork for IShowSpeed’s viral IRL streams worldwide, suffered a severe nerve and disc injury during physically demanding segments of the broadcast on Saturday, January 11, in Kenya.

Slipz captured most of the viral clips from these broadcasts. Later that night, he shared an update along with a photo of himself on what appeared to be a hospital bed.

Slipperrz says the injury is not permanent

He explained that the injury occurred while performing a rally car-and-helicopter segment during the livestream.

“I sustained a pretty bad nerve/disc injury while pushing myself very hard to execute the rally car and helicopter segment of today’s stream from my production side, which ultimately went very well and the team & myself are very proud of how we pulled it off,” he wrote, adding that he later passed out, vomited from dehydration and shock, and temporarily lost feeling in his left leg.

Slipperrz said medical checks indicated non-permanent nerve damage on his left leg and internal bruising in the pelvic area, with no bone fractures or permanent injuries.

He added that he would remain involved in the production of Speed’s streams despite being temporarily sidelined physically.

The injury came amid a record-breaking livestream by Speed in Kenya, which has since drawn more than nine million views within 24 hours of going live.

Speed revealed during the broadcast, while leaving Nairobi National Park, that Kenya had delivered the highest number of new subscribers he has gained in a single livestream since the start of his Africa tour.

The streamer gained more than 300,000 subscribers during the Kenyan stream alone, pushing his channel past the 48 million subscriber mark.

Speed landed in Kenya on Sunday as part of his 28-day Africa tour dubbed “Speed Does Africa,” one of the most ambitious creator-led livestreaming projects to date, expected to span about 20 African countries.

His Kenya stream began at Upper Hill School, where he interacted with students and met members of the Kenya Rugby team as well as javelin world champion and Olympic silver medalist Julius Yego.

He later visited a local restaurant where he tried cooking ugali before heading to Kenyatta Market, where he bought a customised Kenyan top for Ksh20,000. He also sampled local dishes including nyama choma, kachumbari, chapati and mukimo while at the two locations.

The streamer also toured Nairobi National Park, feeding animals at the Animal Orphanage, before having lunch at Carnivore Restaurant and continuing the broadcast inside a customised “nganya” matatu.

Additional stops included Mukuru Affordable Housing, where he met Kenya’s tallest man, Bradley Marongo, popularly known as Gen Z Goliath, and played basketball.

Speed later visited Uhuru Park, where he rode a camel, before being chauffeured by rally driver Ishmael Azeli inside Nairobi Central Business District to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). The day culminated in a scenic helicopter tour over Nairobi.

Throughout the livestream, Speed attracted large crowds across the city, with fans trailing his convoy, recording videos and briefly disrupting traffic in several areas as the broadcast unfolded in real time.

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano later confirmed that the streamer would proceed to the Maasai Mara National Reserve on Monday, January 12, as part of his Kenyan itinerary. “He will be in Maasai Mara tomorrow,” Miano said in a post on X.

Kenya marks one of the most prominent stops on Speed’s Africa tour so far, following previous visits to Angola, Eswatini, South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Rwanda.
