The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced the arrest of suspects involved in mobile phone theft at Raila Odinga Stadium, where 20 stolen phones were recovered.
The arrests come amid heightened security during today’s Madaraka Day celebrations held in Homa Bay County.
Authorities say the swift action by DCI officers helped curb theft incidents, ensuring a safer environment for attendees.
On the other hand, the government has also provided free Wi-Fi access to citizens attending the celebrations, enabling easy sharing of the event and enhancing communication.
Attendees were also urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security personnel. The DCI has promised continued operations to safeguard public gatherings across the country.

According to videos seen by The Kenya Times circulating on social media, Homabay residents began streaming into the stadium around 9:30 p.m., when police officers at the gate allowed entry on 31 May.
By 11:45 p.m., the Raila Odinga Stadium, which seats 20,000, was officially full, prompting police officers to close the gate as thousands of residents were left stranded outside, watching from a distance.
The decision to host the event in Homa Bay was announced on February 27, 2025, shifting from an earlier plan to hold it in Kitui County, primarily due to the thematic alignment with Homa Bay’s strategic location along Lake Victoria.
