Twelve people have been confirmed dead, and three others nursing injuries following a tragic accident in Ikanga area of Taita Taveta County on Thursday, September 7 evening.
Voi Sub County Police Commander Bernastain Shali while confirming the incident noted that the accident involved a 14-seater public service vehicle (PSV) which collided head on with a truck.
“At around 4:20pm, a PSV belonging to the Genesis Company that was moving from Nairobi to Mombasa collided with a trailer here at Ndii,” he said.
Further, the police reported that those who sustained injuries were admitted to the Moi Referral Hospital in Voi.

Also, the police have launched investigations into the incident which occurred at around 4:20pm.
“We have lost twelve people in the accident while three were rushed to Moi Referral Hospital with serious injuries. We have launched investigations to reveal what might have caused the accident,” said Shali.
The bodies of the casualties were taken to Voi Mortuary where examinations will be conducted as part of the police process of establishing the cause of the accident.
Moreover, the police commander urged drivers using the Nairobi Mombasa highway to be keen, adding that they should follow all the traffic rules.

Survivor’s Narration
A survivor who was on the truck said the driver of the PSV was overtaking before colliding with the trailer belonging to Albirum Transporters.
While speaking to journalists, the survivor said they spotted the PSV from a distance and reduced the speed to avoid collision.
“We veered off the road to try and avoid the incoming PSV, but the driver also made the move leading to the collision.
Furthermore, the survivor narrated that his trousers were held and merged with the door of the PSV, hence saving his life.
“When I regained consciousness, I moved to help the driver who had a chair stuck on top of him,” he narrated.
Nonetheless, the officers called on drivers to maintain responsible behavior on the roads while passengers advised to speak out in cases of over speeding to prevent such accidents.
