Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti commended the Kenya Revenue Authority for sealing leakages within the tax collection system .
Kinoti said DCI detectives worked closely with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers to crackdown on cartels at the Times Towers.
According to Kinoti, cartels previously hovered around Times Towers, the KRA headquarters.
The cartels colluded with some KRA officials to abet tax evasion and facilitate access bribery and graft.
He noted that tax leakages have cost the country billions of shillings in revenues.
“Since we started collaborating with KRA and attached our officers to KRA, the country’s revenue base has been on the rise. We have recorded significant progress,” Kinoti stated.
DCI attached detectives disguised as interns and junior staff to spy on KRA bosses and relay the relevant information to the investigating officers.
KRA has been losing billions of shillings in kissed revenue targets majorly blamed on non-remittance of taxes and corruption.
Corrupt KRA officers shield some taxpayers from remitting taxes .
They are then rewarded with hefty bribes.
At the same time, the DCI boss said he is ready to second detectives to other state corporations to tame corruption.
