Teacher Commits Suicide Inside a Toilet

A junior secondary school teacher from Kabisimba area in Chepalungu, Bomet County, has died by suicide.

The 38-year-old, recently employed in Nakuru County, was found hanging from the rooftop of a toilet at his homestead.

According to a police report, the teacher’s wife, Nelly Bett, said her husband left the house in the early hours of the morning to use the latrine but never returned.

Concerned by his prolonged absence, she went to check, only to find her husband’s lifeless body hanging inside the toilet.

Chepalungu Sub-County Police Boss, Phanton Analo, confirmed the incident, stating that the deceased’s body showed no physical injuries.

However, the deceased had bruised lips, likely caused by his struggle during the incident.

The motive behind the suicide remained unclear by the time of publishing this article, as no suicide note was recovered during the search.

The body has since been moved to Longisa Hospital Mortuary.

The recent incident in Chepalungu adds to a worrying trend of rising suicide cases reported across the country.

On December 11, Ryan Kitari, a Zetech University student, died by suicide in his Witeithie apartment in Kiambu County.

His lifeless body was discovered hanging from the upper floor of his residence.

Before the tragedy, Kitari had posted a distressing note on his Facebook page on December 10, detailing his struggles with financial hardship, academic pressure, and personal trauma.

He also expressed frustration over his inability to proceed with a scheduled teaching practice in January 2025, a setback he blamed on his teacher.

Rise of Suicide Cases in Kenya

Earlier, on December 4, a 21-year-old United States International University (USIU) student, Benedict Mberesero from Tanzania, died by suicide in a suspected jump from the rooftop of an 11-story Qwetu Hostels building in Kasarani.

His body was discovered at the exit gate with visible injuries, including a fractured skull, broken arms, and a broken left leg.

In another tragic case, on November 27, a medical intern, Dr. Francis Njeru, died by suicide after just four months of service at Thika Level 5 Hospital.

His death came two months after the demise of another medical intern, Dr. Desree Moraa Obwogi, who was attached to Gatundu County Referral Hospital.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General, Devji Atella, expressed concerns over the growing mental health challenges in the medical field, particularly among young practitioners.

These incidents highlight an urgent need to address mental health issues and provide robust support systems for vulnerable individuals.
