Police in Homa Bay County are investigating an overnight fire that destroyed the rural home of Rangwe Member of Parliament Dr. Lilian Gogo.
The overnight blaze, which reduced Dr. Gogo’s rural homestead in Kanyidoto village to ashes, has raised security concerns in a region already tense with emotion and heavy movement of mourners attending Raila’s final send-off events.
According to preliminary police reports, Dr. Gogo and her family were not at home when the fire broke out. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities say they are exploring whether the incident was politically motivated.
MP Gogo said she received news of the fire while participating in Raila Odinga’s funeral programme in Nairobi.
“I was attending Baba’s funeral programme when I got the call informing me that my house was on fire. I am still in shock and confused about what happened,” she said.
Images obtained by The Kenya Times show the remains of the MP’s house, charred walls, twisted roofing, and burnt furniture which have since gone viral on social media.
Dr. Gogo, who is serving her second term under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has not yet issued a statement on the incident.
Police on the Incident
Rangwe Sub-County Police Commander Magdaline Chebet confirmed the incident, saying preliminary investigations had ruled out an electrical fault as the possible cause.
“There was a blackout around the village at the time the fire broke out. We have, however, started investigations to determine what caused the incident,” said Chebet.
“We found neighbours gathered outside the compound, but they were unable to access the premises because the gate was locked. The officers managed to save a few items from the kitchen, but most of the property had already been destroyed by the time we arrived,” Chebet added.

The incident comes at a delicate time for the ODM stronghold, as the Nyanza region hosts thousands of mourners paying their final respects to Raila Odinga.
On Saturday morning, Odinga’s body was flown from Nairobi to Kisumu, where it is lying in state at Mamboleo Grounds before being taken to Bondo for burial on Sunday.
Security officials have heightened patrols in Homa Bay and Siaya counties amid the overlapping events, warning against attempts to exploit the emotional atmosphere for political mischief.
Dr. Gogo’s case adds to a growing list of politically linked attacks targeting public figures in recent months, raising questions about safety and security around political leaders ahead of a potentially volatile political realignment period.
As mourners gather in Kisumu and Bondo to honor Raila Odinga, the torching of an ODM lawmaker’s home has cast a shadow over an already somber weekend in Nyanza, tension, and uncertainty as Kenya prepares to lay to rest one of its most iconic political figures.
