A 22-year-old man was arrested on June 17 night in Nairobi on suspicion of terror-related activities after police officers on patrol noticed his suspicious behaviour.
The arrest, made at around 11:20 p.m. by officers from Kamukunji Police Station, came after the suspect’s erratic and evasive actions raised alarm during a routine patrol.
Upon stopping and questioning the man, police inspected his bag and discovered 21 detonators, 21 packets of a white substance believed to be ammonium nitrate, a five-meter electric cable, and other unidentified items.
The man was taken into custody on the spot and later handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) for further interrogation.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident.
Police on Terror Activities in the country
In a statement issued on June 18, the National Police Service said it remains vigilant and committed to ensuring public safety.

“The alertness of our officers averted a potentially dangerous situation,” the statement read.
“We urge the public to remain watchful and report any suspicious activity.”
This comes barely a month after four suspected Al-Shabaab militants were fatally shot during a police raid on terrorist hideouts in Garissa County.
According to a statement from the National Police Service (NPS), the operation was carried out on Monday, June 2, by the Special Operations Group (SOG), an elite police unit, following intelligence reports.
The raid targeted locations in the Najo and Guracho areas of Garissa.
“A fierce exchange of fire ensued, overwhelming the Al-Shabaab terrorists,” the NPS said.
“This resulted in four terrorists being fatally shot and the recovery of four AK-47 rifles, one PKM machine gun, assorted ammunition, and communication radios, among other items.”

Technology to Fight Terrorists
In a move to avert terror threats, Kenya is now planning to use Chinese technology to improve its security systems accoridng to Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen.
Murkomen made the announcement after a meeting with a Chinese delegation at Harambee House on Sunday, April 27, 2025.
“Our discussions focused on leveraging Chinese technology and expertise to improve our security systems,” Murkomen said.
The CS was accompanied by Internal Security and National Administration PS Raymond Omollo, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, and DIG (NPS) Eliud Lagat.
According to the Interior Ministry, the courtesy visit provided a platform to strengthen Kenya-China relations, with a particular focus on enhancing cooperation in public security, innovation, and governance.
Internal Security PS Raymond Omollo said the officials discussed deepening Kenya-China security ties under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
