President Donald Trump has celebrated the retirement of Representative Nancy Pelosi, the longtime Democratic lawmaker and former House Speaker who presided over both of his impeachments.
In a statement posted on Truth Social on Friday, November 7, Trump launched a personal attack against Pelosi, accusing her of corruption and criticizing her political legacy.
Pelosi announced her retirement from Congress on Thursday, marking the end of a political career that spanned more than three decades.
The 85-year-old made history as the first woman to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, a position she held twice — from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.
At the end of her second term, she stepped down from House leadership for the Democratic Party but retained the honorary title of Speaker Emerita of the House.

In her tenure, Pelosi oversaw Trump’s two impeachments — first in 2019, over abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and again in 2021, for incitement of insurrection following the January 6 Capitol riot.

While reacting to the California Democrat’s retirement just moments after her announcement on Thursday, Trump, in a text message to Fox News journalist Peter Doocy, called her “evil” and “overrated.”
“The retirement of Nancy Pelosi is a great thing for America,” Trump said in the text message to Doocy, who read out the president’s reaction on air.
“She was rapidly losing control of her party, and it was never coming back. I’m very honored that she impeached me twice and failed miserably twice. Nancy Pelosi is a highly overrated politician.”
Nancy Pelosi’s retirement
Pelosi, while announcing that she will not seek reelection in 2026, released a six-minute video thanking her constituents in San Francisco for their decades of support.
“Thank you, San Francisco, for trusting me to be your voice in Congress. May God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America,” she said in the video.
Over nearly four decades in the House, Pelosi rose through the Democratic ranks, serving as minority whip, minority leader, and twice as Speaker of the House. Her leadership was marked by her ability to unite her caucus, marshal votes, and guide major legislation through a sharply divided Congress.

During her tenure, Pelosi championed expanded access to healthcare, civil rights protections, and stricter gun control measures. She played a pivotal role in passing the Affordable Care Act under President Barack Obama and the Inflation Reduction Act under President Joe Biden.
Reacting to her announcement, Biden praised Pelosi’s legacy in a post on X, defending why she awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
“I often said Nancy Pelosi was the best Speaker of the House in American history — it’s why I awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. When I was President, we worked together to grow our economy, create millions of jobs, and make historic investments in our nation’s future. She has devoted much of her life to this country, and America will always be grateful. Jill and I wish Nancy and Paul all the best,” Biden said.
On his part, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also paid tribute to Pelosi’s leadership, noting that “during her 20 years leading House Democrats, she fiercely navigated many trials and tribulations, including a once-in-a-century pandemic, a horrific attack on the United States Capitol, and a violent attempt on her husband’s life. Through it all, she led with strength and dignity.”
