U.S. President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, to sell the popular short-form video app’s U.S. operations by another 90 days.
Therefore, the new deadline is now set for September 17, 2025.
Trump made the announcement on Thursday, June 19, through Truth Social, stating that he had signed an executive order granting the extension.
This marks the third reprieve since the law requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok was passed under the Biden administration due to national security concerns.
“I’ve just signed the Executive Order extending the Deadline for the TikTok closing for 90 days (September 17, 2025). Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote.

Trump on the Way Forward
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Wednesday, Trump said he believed Chinese President Xi Jinping would support a deal to sell the app to an American company, should a buyer come forward.
ByteDance is headquartered in Beijing, and Chinese regulations would require approval for such a transaction.
The White House confirmed the extension, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noting that the administration’s goal is to ensure TikTok remains available to U.S. users while protecting their data.
“President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark. This extension will last 90 days, which the administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.”
TikTok, which has over 170 million users in the United States, has been at the center of an ongoing debate over data privacy and national security.

2024 US TikTok Ban
The app briefly went offline earlier this year, just before Trump was inaugurated, but resumed operations after he signalled that he did not intend to enforce a shutdown.
In the interim, many users had switched to RedNote, another Chinese-owned social media platform.
However, usage of RedNote has since declined following TikTok’s return.
TikTok has consistently denied that it poses a threat to national security and stated that U.S. user data is not stored in China.
In a statement, the company welcomed the extension:
“We are grateful for President Trump’s leadership and support in ensuring that TikTok continues to be available for more than 170 million American users and 7.5 million U.S. businesses that rely on the platform,” the company said.
