New national polling shows President Donald Trump struggling on key issues like inflation, foreign policy, immigration, and the war in Iran, a warning sign for Republicans as the U.S. heads into the 2026 midterm elections.
According to the latest NBC News poll conducted between February 27 and March 3, only 36% of registered voters approve of Trump’s handling of inflation and the cost of living, while 62% disapprove. On the situation in Iran, approval rises slightly to 41%, but 54% still disapprove of his approach.
Similar disapproval is seen for his overall foreign policy, with 43% approval and 54% disapproval, and immigration, where 44% approve, and 54% disapprove. These numbers indicate that Trump remains underwater on nearly all major issues that matter to voters this year.
Inflation and the Pocketbook
Inflation is a top concern for many Americans. Gasoline prices have surged in recent weeks, with national averages climbing above $3.40 per gallon for regular gas and diesel exceeding $4.60 per gallon.
Rising energy costs have put pressure on households across the country, and Trump’s defense of the situation, citing long-term national security interests over short-term costs, has done little to sway voters.

The NBC poll shows that a majority of Americans blame him for the rising cost of living, signaling a potential vulnerability for the GOP in the midterms.
War in Iran and Public Sentiment
Trump’s escalation of military action in Iran has divided public opinion. While some Americans support his tough stance against the Iranian regime, the NBC poll finds 54% of voters disapprove of his handling of the situation, with only 41% expressing approval.
Fears of a broader conflict appear to weigh heavily on public sentiment. Similarly, the president’s overall foreign policy receives 54% disapproval and 43% approval, showing that many voters remain unconvinced about his international strategy.
Street protests and rallies have reflected this division. Some citizens have celebrated the removal of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while others have expressed concern over the potential for escalation and further U.S. involvement in the Middle East.
Immigration Ratings Lag
Immigration, historically a strong Republican issue, also presents challenges. Only 44% approve of Trump’s policies, while 54% disapprove, highlighting potential difficulties in mobilizing the party’s base on this front. Combined with economic and foreign policy concerns, immigration discontent adds another hurdle for GOP candidates ahead of November.

These poll numbers suggest a tough path for Republicans in the 2026 midterms. Historically, sitting presidents with low approval ratings on critical issues like inflation and foreign policy tend to see their party lose seats in Congress.
With Trump underwater on multiple fronts, the GOP may struggle to energize independent and moderate voters, crucial groups in competitive districts.
Even Trump’s State of the Union address on February 24, which received generally positive reviews, has not fully offset voter concerns. With a majority disapproving of his handling of inflation, Iran, and foreign policy, as well as immigration, the president’s position could weigh heavily on Republicans’ electoral chances.
