Technical teachers seeking to join the profession under Kenya’s Competency-Based Education system will now have clearer guidance following a new circular outlining subject requirements for the recruitment.
The Teachers Service Commission has issued detailed minimum qualifications for individuals pursuing technical teaching courses, specifying Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education subject combinations expected for each specialization.
The guidelines aim to ensure uniform standards for the recruitment, placement, and certification of teachers in line with the demands of the CBC framework.
According to the circular, applicants must have a minimum mean grade of C+ and meet specific subject requirements depending on the area of specialization.
The Commission says the move will help align teacher training with the skills-based approach that underpins CBC.
Subject Combinations Detailed
The circular provides subject-specific requirements across a range of technical fields.
Where alternative subjects are listed, attaining a minimum grade of C+ in any one of the alternatives is sufficient.

The requirements will guide recruitment decisions, as well as placement and deployment of teachers across learning institutions.
Educational institutions have been directed to disseminate the contents of the circular widely to ensure uniform application during certification of academic and professional documents.
The move is expected to promote consistency and reduce discrepancies that have previously affected teacher recruitment processes.
The guidelines will also apply to individuals pursuing diploma and bachelor’s degree programs in technical and technology education.
This is expected to ensure that teacher training pathways remain aligned with the expectations of the Commission and the needs of the CBC system.
The circular further advises that any clarification regarding the subject requirements should be sought from the Teacher Professional Management Directorate, specifically the Registration Division.
Technical Teacher and Infrastructure Gaps
Education stakeholders continue to identify shortages of specialized technical teachers and inadequate infrastructure as key challenges affecting the delivery of technical subjects under the Competency-Based Curriculum.

Many schools lack fully equipped workshops, tools, and materials required for practical learning, limiting effective implementation of skills-based instruction.
The shortage of trained teachers in areas such as electricity, power mechanics, and media technology has also strained existing staff, with some schools relying on teachers trained in non-technical subjects.
