The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) has warned students against enrolling in institutions that issue certificates without legal authority, warning that such qualifications are not recognized in Kenya.
In a notice published on March 10, TVETA said only recognized Qualification Awarding Bodies (QABs) established through an Act of Parliament or subsidiary legislation are legally allowed to assess trainees and award nationally recognized certificates.
“The Authority’s attention has been drawn to an increased number of training institutions without legal mandate to award certificates duping the public by awarding internal certificates,” read part of the notice.
“The public is hereby notified that recognized certificates in Kenya SHALL only be awarded by Recognized Qualification Awarding Bodies (QABs) that have legal mandate conferred through an Act of Parliament and/or subsidiary legislation, including Legal Notices or Legal Orders.”
The authority noted that some training institutions are misleading the public by offering internal certificates without the legal mandate to issue recognized qualifications.
TVETA Warns Students Over Certificates From Unaccredited Institutions
According to TVETA, any certificates issued by institutions that are not accredited, registered, and licensed under the law cannot be recognized for employment, further education, licensing, or other official purposes in the country.
The regulator further clarified that since the enactment of the TVET Act in 2013, no private TVET institution in Kenya has been accredited as a Qualification Awarding Body with the legal mandate to assess and award recognized certificates.
The authority urged students, parents, guardians, and employers to exercise caution and verify the legal status of training institutions before enrolling or paying fees for assessment and certification.
The regulator warned that any institution found misrepresenting its legal status or issuing certificates without authority will face regulatory and legal action in accordance with the law.
