The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has impounded a vehicle that was caught overloaded and ferrying students in its boot.
NTSA in a statement on May 14 said that the vehicle was carrying 13 students along Kitale – Kapenguria Road.
“Vehicle found ferrying 13 students impounded along Kitale – Kapenguria Road. The driver has been arrested and will be charged,” NTSA said in a statement.
The authority further urged motorists to prioritize the safety of the children and ensure that they arrive in their respective schools safely.
NTSA Issues Directives as Schools Reopens
This comes after NTSA issued fresh directives to drivers ahead of school reopening for the second term of 2024.
In a statement on May 12, the authority urged drivers to be cautious, especially those who will be carrying children back to school.

The authority noted that it is already conducting road safety compliance checks along the Narok – Nairobi Road, Mombasa – Nairobi Highway and Kisii County.
NTSA also explained that it is a collective responsibility to ensure that the children arrive at their respective schools safely, further highlighting violations that should be avoided.
“School transport like all Public Service Vehicles, must comply with traffic rules and regulations. Violations include defective speed limiter and faded chevron and reflectors,” it added.
The authority also stated that all School transport vehicles must have a functional speed limiter that is onboarded onto the NTSA Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS).

Other requirements include a valid inspection certificate, valid Road Service License (RSL) \functional seatbelts, valid vehicle insurance.
“School administration MUST put in place measures to ensure full Compliance with the requirements of the Traffic Act and the PSV regulations,” the authority said earlier.
“We urge all motorists to be cautious and be mindful of other road users as children go back to school.”
