Azimio Senators want President William Ruto to apologize for the remarks he made concerning the sugar investors while on his tour of the Western Kenya region.
Speaking on Tuesday, August 29, a section of Azimio Senators led by Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, condemned Ruto’s remarks, claiming that such utterances will put off foreign investors.
“I am enraged by the reckless remarks made at a roadside meeting in Bungoma concerning the alleged cartels frustrating the sugar industry.
It is quite disturbing to hear that a whole president threatening investors in Kenya by claiming that they be arrested, deported, or taken to heaven,” the Kilifi Senator said.
Furthermore, the Azimio Senators claimed that President Ruto’s words will scare investors instead of attracting them to the country.
“What message is the president selling the investors who are not supporting him. Does it mean if your political view differs with the president then you risk you falling under his wrath, for example your business being labeled as a cartel or living in fear of your life, because your life has been threatened.”
According to the opposition politicians, Kenya is democratic country, governed by the rule of law.

William Ruto Remarks
President William Ruto gave an ultimatum to investors he described as cartels sabotaging the sugar industry.
Speaking on August 28, while on his 5-day tour in Western region the President gave an ultimatum to the investors fighting for the control of the ailing Mumias sugar, to either leave the country, go to jail, or go to heaven.
“Let them withdraw the court case and move out. I have told there are only three options left, they either move out, go to jail, or embark on the journey to heaven,” President William Ruto said.
Earlier on August 27, Ruto singled out businessman Jaswant Singh Singh, the owner of Kabras sugar and Rai Group over the state of the sugar industry.
Rai Group owned by the businessman controls more than 40 percent of the country’s sugar production and market supplies.

“Do not be worried, I am alert to make sure everything will be okay. There is no one who will meddle. Do not be worried about someone coming to talk to us. Someone was telling me Rai. Who is Rai? No, that is not possible,” the President said.
