The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has released a five-day weather forecast for the period between Tuesday, March 11, and Saturday, March 15.

In its forecast, Kenya Met stated that rainfall is expected in several parts of the country.

These regions include the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, parts of the Coastal Region, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Northwestern, and Northeastern parts of Kenya.

Counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley include Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi.

On the other hand, counties in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

Isolated storms and heavy rainfall are expected over some of these two regions.

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, a few areas could receive showers, especially in the afternoons and nights.

Mornings are expected to be rainy for the first part of the forecast period, while the rest of the mornings will remain sunny.

Kenya Met warned that the minimum temperatures will fall to as low as 8°C minimum while maximum average daytime temperatures will rise up to 30°C.

Rains over few places accompanied by showers are, on the other hand, expected to prevail throughout the week in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley region.

The average minimum night-time temperature will be as low as 11°C with daytime temperatures expected to rise up to 35°C.

The Coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties as well as the coastal parts of Tana River are expected to experience daylong sunny intervals.

Kenya Met said that some areas will experience morning and afternoon showers only on Tuesday. Nights are expected to be partly cloudy.

The average maximum daytime temperatures are expected to rise up to 34°C while minimum night-time temperature will be as low as 22°C.

In the South-eastern lowlands covering Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita-Taveta counties as well as the inland parts of Tana-River County, Kenya Met predicts that the regions are expected to experience showers mainly during the day alternating with sunny intervals accompanied by partly cloudy skies in the afternoons.

The average maximum daytime temperatures are expected to rise up to 34°C while minimum night-time temperature will be as low as 13°C.

Other regions

At the same time, Kenya Met said that rains alternating with sunny conditions are expected during the day in Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Turkana and Samburu counties while skies are likely to remain partly cloudy during the night.

The weatherman warned that the maximum average daytime temperatures in these counties will exceed 38°C.

Strong Southeasterly winds of more than 25 knots (12.9 m/s) are also expected in parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.

The forecast comes after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that the government has set aside Ksh40 million for disaster and emergency response ahead of the start of the long rains.

While appearing before the Senate on Wednesday, CS Murkomen said the Ministry had told residents of Kisumu, Busia and Tana River counties to prepare for a possibility of floods.

He said the government has strengthened early warning systems and disaster preparedness measures in readiness for flood risks and will be issuing timely alerts, besides mobilizing emergency response.
