Former Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga on Saturday, October 26 declined President William Ruto’s appointment as a member of the Nairobi Rivers Commission.
In a statement, Omanga thanked Ruto for the appointment but declined it for personal reasons.
“I’m deeply honoured and grateful to William Ruto for the trust you’ve shown in appointing me to serve on the Nairobi Rivers Commission. It’s truly a privilege to be considered for such a vital role in improving our beloved Nairobi’s environment and public health.
After careful consideration, I must respectfully decline the appointment due to personal reasons. I remain committed to supporting efforts aimed at restoring Nairobi’s rivers & stand ready to contribute in any capacity that aligns with my current commitments. Thank you once again for this honour and for the consideration,” Omanga said.
Ruto, in a gazette notice dated October 25, had appointed Omanga alongside Bishop Margaret Wanjiru who was appointed as the Nairobi Rivers Commission Chairperson.
Omanga declines Ruto’s state appointment
“Now therefore, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, in the exercise of the powers conferred on me by the Constitution and the Laws of the Republic of Kenya do hereby establish the Nairobi Rivers Commission,” read part of the notice.

Some of the roles the former Nominated Senator was to perform in the commission include:
1. Coordinating efforts to clean and restore the Nairobi rivers, including the Ngong, Nairobi and Mathare rivers.
2. Examining previous reports and recommendations made in the efforts of reclaiming the Nairobi River and adopt lessons learnt in the new initiative.

3. Evaluating the rivers to identify both current and future challenges, along with their underlying causes and create an initiative called the Nairobi Rivers Basin Regeneration Program (NABREP) aimed at restoring and improving the Nairobi Basin and its associated infrastructure.
Omanga alongside other members of the Commission who were appointed by the President are supposed to hold office for a term of three years, renewable once based on performance, according to the head of state.

Omanga’s decline of state appointment comes days after former Machakos Member of Parliament Victor Munyaka also declined President William Ruto’s appointment as the Chairman of the Kenya Animal Genetic Resource Centre through a Kenya Gazette notice dated October 3 2024.
