US President Donald Trump has warned that any country aligning with BRICS, including China, will face an additional 10% tariff on goods entering the United States.
In a post on Sunday, Trump said the policy would have no exceptions and accused the BRICS group of promoting anti-American policies.
BRICS includes 11 countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran.
“Any country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an additional 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions,” Trump posted on his Truth Social network on Sunday, July 7.
At the same time, Trump also announced that he would start issuing tariff warning letters or unveiling new trade deals on July 7, as the 90-day pause on his reciprocal tariff policy approaches its end.

China Responds to the US President
However, China has responded to the statement, defending BRICS and dismissing the accusation of hostility.
Further, she noted that BRICS does not aim to confront any nation and stands for openness, inclusivity, and win-win cooperation.
“BRICS does not engage in camp confrontation and is not targeted at any country,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning during a Monday press briefing.
She described the bloc as an important platform for cooperation between emerging markets and developing countries.
“It advocates openness, inclusiveness, and willing cooperation. It is not a bloc for confrontation, nor does it target any country.
“On the U.S. tariff hikes, China has made its position clear more than once. Trade wars and tariff wars have no winners, and protectionism leads nowhere,” she added.
Meanwhile, the U.S. and China recently reached a trade agreement under which Washington eased certain restrictions, and Beijing agreed to speed up its exports of rare earth materials.
In return, the US allowed the continued enrollment of Chinese students in American colleges and universities.

Upcoming BRICS Summit
The statement came just days before the 17th BRICS Summit scheduled for July 6–7 in Brazil, where leaders from member states are meeting to discuss economic cooperation and global influence.
Although the BRICS bloc did not mention Trump by name, it condemned the growing use of tariffs and trade restrictions in a collective statement ahead of the summit.
Initially made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the group expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia formally joined the bloc in 2025.
