President Trump described the California Governor as grossly incompetent for allowing the U.S. film industry to decline after recent research showed that Hollywood is making fewer movies.

“Now, you have a grossly incompetent governor who allowed that to happen, so I’m not just blaming other nations. But other nations — a lot of them — have stolen our movie industry,” he said.
The U.S. President blames the California Governor for the decline that is beleaguering the U.S. film and TV industry.

“Other nations have been stealing the moviemaking capabilities from the United States.
I’ve seen some very strong research over the last week, and we’re making very few movies now. Hollywood is being destroyed,” Trump stated.

Trump Embarrasses California Governor
Following the troubles surrounding the film industry in the U.S., President Donald Trump suggested that his administration would impose tariffs on films that are not produced in the U.S.
Additionally, President Trump noted that governments are pumping a lot of money into the film industry, and if a country like the U.S. is making few films, then that is a threat to the U.S.,” President Trump said.

The U.S. President was echoing what he had posted on his Truth Social on Sunday, May 4, 2025, where he had said, “The movie Industry in America is dying a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat,” said Trump.
US President Proposes 100% Tariff on Foreign Movies
Therefore, President Trump stated that he is authorising the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% tariff on any and all movies coming into the U.S. that are produced in foreign lands.

Pre-COVID-19 pandemic estimates from 2011, reported by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis and the National Endowment for the Arts, pegged the creative industries, led by Hollywood, at $504 billion, or about 3.2% of U.S. GDP.
This included film, TV, advertising, and related sectors, with the movie and video industries alone adding $47 billion in value-added and employing 310,000 workers. Total output from arts and cultural production was $916 billion.
Currently, the U.S. film industry is valued at around $91.83 billion as of 2020.
