The United States (U.S) has reported significant progress in the negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, following high-level talks between American officials and Ukrainian leaders.
Marco Antonio Rubio, the 72nd U.S. Secretary of State, described the meeting as “the most meaningful and productive” since the process began, in search of a potential breakthrough in efforts to secure a lasting agreement.
Hopes of Peace in Ukraine
Speaking after the closed-door discussions in Geneva, Switzerland, Rubio stated that the talks were built on months of groundwork and input from all relevant parties.
“We have a very good work product that was already built on a foundation of input from all the relative parties involved.”
According to Rubio, negotiators reviewed proposals point by point, making adjustments intended to narrow differences and bring both sides closer to an agreement acceptable to the U.S and Ukraine.
Rubio also noted that while the final agreement will require approval from President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he expressed confidence in the progress of the negotiations.
“I feel very comfortable about that happening given the progress we’ve made.”
State Secretary Rubio acknowledged that Russia remains a critical factor in trying to bring peace to Ukraine, adding that U.S. officials have gained substantial insights into Putin’s priorities over the past nine months.
However, he cautioned that work remains unfinished, with all parties involved in the talks continuing to refine proposals and address outstanding issues with further updates expected later this week.
Ukraine Expresses Confidence in U.S
On the Ukrainian side, officials echoed the statements on the progress expressed by Secretary Rubio and his American team.
Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, described the session as “very productive” and reaffirmed that they are doing all that is asked of them as they remain committed to achieving a just and lasting peace.
“The Ukrainian people deserve and want this peace more than anyone on this planet. We thank the U.S, our biggest friend, and especially President Donald Trump and his team for their commitment to bring this peace.”
Yermak added that Ukraine is looking forward to joining the proposals that will be presented later this week and engaging its national allies.
The chief of staff to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said that the Ukrainian President will issue a statement after the next round of proposed peace deal talks.
He also thanked Rustem Umerov, the Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, who contributed to drafting and negotiating elements of the U.S.-proposed plan.

Both delegations agreed to maintain engagement in the coming days and to incorporate European partners into the process.
Why the Talks Need to Progress
The recent peace deal talks come amid heightened international scrutiny of efforts to end the tragic war that has devastated parts of eastern Ukraine and degraded global security.
While details of the proposals remain confidential, sources familiar with the talks suggest that discussions have focused on security guarantees, territorial arrangements, and mechanisms for monitoring compliance.
The U.S has invested nine months in understanding Russian priorities, which remain central to any settlement.

Direct infrastructure damage in Ukraine is estimated at $170 billion (Ksh22 trillion), with housing losses alone reaching $60 billion (Ksh7.7 trillion) after 236,000 residential buildings were damaged or destroyed.
Success in the talks would end hostilities, enable reconstruction in Ukraine, and strengthen U.S diplomatic influence.
