Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that 290,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the beginning of 2025.
In a statement on August 31, Zelensky said the figures are according to a report from Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.
He stated that the Russians are suffering the heaviest losses in the Pokrovsk direction, where they are concentrating their greatest efforts.
Zelensky said the Ukrainian army continues to carry out its assigned tasks in the Donetsk region and methodically destroys the occupier.
Across the front, in just the first eight months of this year, the Russians have lost more than 290,000 soldiers killed and severely wounded.
He stated that the majority of these losses were sustained specifically in the Donetsk region, while Russia failed to achieve any of its strategic objectives.
Zelensky thanked his troops, adding that additional measures are being implemented to ensure stability in the region.
On certain sectors of the front, our stabilisation measures are currently underway. I am grateful to every unit that ensures the replenishment of Ukraine’s “exchange fund” – every week there are corresponding results. Thank you!
He stated that Ukraine had analysed in detail the situation in the Zaporizhzhia direction and the intentions of the Russian army.
Zelensky said the situation in the border areas of the Sumy and Kharkiv regions has also been analysed.
Ukraine to Launch New Strikes
Additionally, he announced that Ukraine will continue its operations and is prepared to launch new attacks.
We will continue our active operations in exactly the way needed for Ukraine’s defence. The forces and resources are prepared. New deep strikes have also been planned.
In a statement on August 30, Zelensky said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed him about the talks with U.S. President Trump in Washington with the participation of European leaders.
He said the leaders had a productive and important conversation, with a shared vision among partners on how to achieve real peace.

Zelensky Ready to Meet Putin
Zelensky also stated that he is ready to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a ceasefire deal.
He accused Russia of continuing to launch strikes instead of paving the way for diplomacy to prevail.
“Ukraine reaffirmed its readiness for a meeting with the head of Russia. Almost two weeks have passed, and during this time, when Russia should have been preparing for diplomacy, Moscow has given no positive signals – only carried out cynical strikes on civilian targets and killed dozens of our people,” he said.
Zelensky said the end of the war must start with an immediate ceasefire and necessary silence from both countries.

Position of European Leaders
He stated that all European leaders support a ceasefire deal between Ukraine and Russia.
“It is impossible to speak meaningfully about peace while our cities and communities are under constant fire. India is ready to make the necessary efforts and to deliver the appropriate signals to Russia and other leaders during the meetings on the sidelines of the summit,” he added.
