Its proximity to Kamiti Maximum Prison allows for secure and swift case processing, modelled after the successful Shanzu Law Court near Shimo La Tewa Prison in Mombasa.
The court was established with support from international partners, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United States, and the United Kingdom, enhancing its role in addressing global concerns like terrorism and transnational crime.
The court is Kenya’s first and largest judicial facility dedicated to:
- Counter-terrorism cases
- Human trafficking
- Wildlife poaching and trafficking
- Drug trafficking
Operating under Article 159 of the Constitution of Kenya, the court upholds principles of justice, fairness, and impartiality, contributing to the protection of human rights and combating impunity for serious crimes.
While primarily focused on counter-terrorism and serious transboundary crimes, the court may also handle other criminal cases as needed, depending on judicial assignments within Kiambu County’s court system.
The court is staffed by experienced magistrates and judges, with support from court clerks, prosecutors, and security personnel.
Senior Principal Magistrate Maureen Odero, for instance, has presided over notable cases, indicating the presence of high-calibre judicial officers.
The court employs a robust case management system, integrating digital tools to streamline processes like scheduling, document submission, and case tracking, aligning with the Judiciary’s goal of reducing delays and enhancing transparency.
Facilities and Technology
Kahawa Law Courts are equipped with modern infrastructure to enhance judicial operations, like an E-Filing system that the court has adopted to manage case systems, allowing for electronic filing and tracking of cases, which improves efficiency and transparency.
The public information kiosk in the court compound provides access to court information and services for litigants and the public.
The courtrooms are modern, designed to handle high-profile cases with secure facilities for judges, prosecutors, defence teams, and witnesses.
Given its proximity to Kamiti Maximum Prison, the court is integrated with high-security protocols to manage cases involving dangerous offenders.
Challenges and Considerations
Due to its location within a high-security prison, public access is restricted, requiring visitors to undergo security checks or obtain prior approval.

While equipped with modern facilities, the court faces challenges common to Kenya’s judiciary, such as staffing shortages or funding limitations, though international support has mitigated some of these issues.
The court’s presence in Kahawa West has increased local visibility of judicial processes, but its high-security nature may limit community engagement compared to urban courts like those in Nairobi.
