Detectives are rushing against time to unravel the killing of a Nairobi lawyer, Kyalo Mbobu. CCTV footage retrieved on September 11, 2025, gave a fresh lead, with investigators tracing the lawyer’s last moments before a gunman shot him.
In the footage, a man was captured on surveillance cameras talking on his phone as lawyer Kyalo Mbobu walked past shortly before his death.
Detectives believe the unidentified individual may hold critical clues to the fatal shooting of the prominent Nairobi lawyer along Magadi Road on September 9.
The fresh lead emerged as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) intensified the probe, interrogating two other suspects and impounding their vehicles for forensic analysis.
Revealed CCTV footage
Investigators confirmed the two were among the people Mbobu met on the day he died and shared a meal with in Kilimani.
The CCTV footage shows Mbobu leaving his city office at 5:11 PM, dressed in a blue shirt and tie and carrying a laptop bag.
He greeted security guards before walking to his car on Kounda Street.
He then drove through Wabera Street, Parliament Road, and Langata Road toward Magadi Road, unaware of the danger ahead.
Detectives say the man on the phone, the two questioned suspects, and the impounded vehicles are now key pieces in uncovering the circumstances behind Mbobu’s killing.
The death of Kyalo Mbobu
Kyalo Mbobu, a prominent lawyer, a university lecturer, and possibly a major wheeler-dealer in Nairobi’s high circles, was shot dead from aimed pistol shots on the outskirts of the city on the early evening of Tuesday, 9 September 2025.
The manner of the lawyer’s gruesome death has a strong resemblance to how another prominent personality, a politician and a lawmaker, Mr Charles On’gondo Were’s life was also snuffed out in the early evening of Wednesday, 30 April 2025.
The circumstances leading to the death of this high-profile lawyer, as released by police, indicate that the lawyer’s self-driven vehicle had slowed down in a traffic jam before a hooded pillion passenger toting a pistol walked to his car window and shot him dead before confidently jumping back on the waiting motorbike and weaving its way through the crawling traffic and zooming off.
Death is suspected to have been instantaneous, with nothing taken from the dead man.
Autopsy Results
The government Pathologist, Johansen Oduor, revealed that City lawyer Kyalo Mbobu died from excessive bleeding and severe injuries.

The autopsy report released on September 11, 2025, indicated that Mbobu was shot eight times, with two bullets recovered so far.
Two bullets, including one lodged in the left arm, were recovered for ballistic analysis.
“Upon examining the body, we found that he was shot a total of eight times, with most of the gunshots coming from the right side of the body. We were able to recover two bullets, which have been handed over to the investigating officer for ballistic analysis. He suffered severe bleeding due to injuries to the neck vessels, as well as spinal injuries. These injuries were severe enough to cause death, with both spinal and neck injuries contributing to significant blood loss,” Oduor said.
Kyalo Mbobu Did Not Die Instantly
Oduor stated that Mbobu did not die instantly; he bled for some time. The pathologist concluded that the shooting was intentional, noting that someone firing eight times clearly aimed to kill.

Kyalo Mbobu was shot along Lang’ata Road near the Galleria-Brookhouse area while driving home alone in his four-wheel-drive vehicle.
While he was minutes away from approaching his Boyani home in Karen, the assailants, who had been trailing him, gunned him down.
The family of the slain lawyer is now demanding justice. His brother, fellow lawyer James Maluki, urged the government to conduct a thorough probe into the killing.
