The investigation into the murder of British businessman Campbell Scott, who was killed in Kenya in February 2025, has taken a new twist following fresh court orders.
This follows a request by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), through the state prosecutor, to release the second suspect, Albunus Mutinda Nzioki, after findings cleared him of involvement in the crime.

While closing the miscellaneous case before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina at the Milimani Law Courts, ODPP requested that Albunus be released on the condition that he continue reporting to the police and assisting in ongoing investigations.
State prosecutor Joyce Olajo informed the court that Mutinda would be turned into a state witness in the murder trial.

“The DPP has directed Albanus (Mutinda) to be freed as he will be a witness. He will also assist in the apprehension of two more suspects at large,” Olajo told Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina.

First suspect in Campbell Scott murder to face murder charges
Meanwhile, the first suspect in the murder, Alex Mutua Kithuka, is set to appear before the Makadara High Court tomorrow to face murder charges.
The prosecution stated that, following the conclusion of investigations, they had decided to charge him with Scott’s murder.
Investigating officers further told the court that they forwarded the case file to the ODPP for review and final advice last Friday.
Kithuka was remanded at the Capitol Hill police station until Wednesday, when he will be presented at the Makadara High Court to answer the charges.
The two suspects have been in police custody since their arrest on March 3, 2025, while authorities continue to pursue two others who remain at large.
Earlier in the investigation, police alleged that Mutua and Albunus lured Scott to a residence in the Pipeline area belonging to the first suspect.
Investigators believe Scott was killed there before his body was transported and dumped in Makueni County.
Campbell arrived in Kenya a day after Valentine’s Day, on February 15, 2025, and checked into a hotel in Westlands, Nairobi.
He went missing on February 16 before his body was later discovered hidden in a thicket at the Makongo Forest along Machakos-Wote Road.

Preliminary investigations revealed that on the day he disappeared, he was last seen leaving a pub in Westlands with an unidentified male African.

Further, the court heard that the deceased was taken to Pipeline Estate within Nairobi’s Eastlands to a house belonging to Mutua, where he is believed to have been murdered.
Chief Magistrate Onyina was also told that there were failed attempts to withdraw money from the deceased’s Visa cards in Nairobi, Voi, and Mombasa.
Additionally, the court heard that by the time of his arrest, Kithuka had already vacated the house and moved all household goods to an unknown location.
The latest development comes after another key suspect in the murder case died by suicide on Wednesday, March 12, in Dandora, Nairobi.
Samuel Musembi, who had been on the run since Scott’s body was discovered, allegedly succumbed to injuries at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
He reportedly inflicted a deep stab wound on his neck while hiding at a friend’s house in Dandora.
Detectives said that Musembi had first ingested an unidentified poisonous substance in what investigators believe was a premeditated attempt to take his own life.
