Roads Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has been summoned by the Environment and Lands Court over the failure to construct lavatories along highways to be used by travellers.
The court said that the government through the Ministry of transport has failed to comply with orders that were issued on January 16, 2020.
On Monday, March 3, Justice Oguttu Mboya directed CS Murkomen to comply with the orders and appear before the court on September 20 and explain the status of the project.

In the order issued by the Environment and Lands court, the CS in charge of Roads and Transport is supposed to constitute a committee made up of representatives from the Council of Governors (CoG), the Kenya National Highways Authority, Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KRRA) and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA).
The committee is mandated with the responsibility of providing sanitation facilities for travellers among other related needs.
The case was brought before the Lands and Environment court after Lawyer Adrian Kamotho filed a petition seeking the enforcement of Article 42 of the Constitution which entitles every citizen to the right to reasonable standards of sanitation and the right to a clean and healthy environment.
