Butula Boys High School is a national secondary school located in Busia County, Kenya. The school was established in 1964 and has since grown into one of the top-performing boys’ schools in the country. It currently occupies a 10-acre site and has a student population of over 2,000.
The school’s founding dates back to 1964, when it began with 45 pioneer students. These students initially started their education at St. Paul’s Amukura in Teso South Sub-County, also in Busia County. They were placed in Form 1B — with “B” denoting Butula — before the school had its own campus.
In 1965, the class was relocated to the current Butula Boys High School location. At that time, the then deputy principal of St. Paul’s Amukura was appointed as the first principal of the newly established learning institution.
In 2014, the school officially achieved national status, joining the ranks of Kenya’s elite secondary schools.
Butula Boys High School offers a broad curriculum that is enhanced by a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, drama, and debate. The school has produced many prominent alumni across various fields, including politics, business, and academia, and has consistently ranked among the top-performing high schools over the years.
Butula Boys High School KCSE performance
In the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, Butula Boys High School presented 377 candidates. Over 95% of them attained the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.

16 students scored a straight A, while 57 scored an A-. Additionally, 85 students attained a B+, 89 scored a B, while 60 managed a B-.
Additionally, 54 students scored a C+, 10 students scored a C, and the lowest grade recorded was a C-, achieved by 6 students.
The school achieved an impressive mean score of 9.10, reflecting a slight improvement of 0.1182 from the previous year.
