Do’s and Don’ts During End of Year Parties

An end of year office party provides an opportunity to celebrate the successes of the past year, recognize outstanding achievements, and inspire employees for the upcoming year.

It’s also a chance for employees to build stronger relationships, get to know one another better, and have fun together in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

For some companies, it is a time to highlight accomplishments, where CEOs share the company’s performance over the year, and employees are heartily recognized for their hard work and contributions.

During this time, drinks flow freely, and a lavish buffet is spread out, setting the stage for a festive and enjoyable celebration.

However, during these parties, there are some do’s and don’ts you should observe to ensure a respectful and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Award Winning HR Consultant and Practitioner, Ann Wamonje emphasizes that companies are different, and each company has its own work ethics and culture.

“Being a social event, it is important that these parties are not used to disrespect each other or the company and that’s why practicing this social etiquette will go a long way for any employee,” she said.

“It is important to remember that your employment life goes on even after the party. Do not let one event destroy the reputation you have spent your entire life building. Like my boss keeps saying, you will never finish all the alcohol in this world so stop trying to.”

Do’s and Don’ts During End of Year Parties

1. End of Year Parties are Carefully Planned and Operate within a Set budget

Unless your employer specifically invites you to bring a guest, it’s best to avoid tagging along with a +1 or bringing all your relatives. If your employer allows you to bring someone, make sure to brief them in advance on the expected behavior during the party.

Remember, their actions reflect on you, especially when everyone is back at work after the event. Don’t let your guest’s behavior lead to embarrassment or ridicule among your colleagues.

Additionally, if your employer provides free food and alcohol, refrain from hiding them to take home. It’s common to see employees sneaking alcohol before the party even begins—this behavior is inappropriate and can lead to unnecessary embarrassment.

2. Drink Responsibly and Avoid Regret

Alcohol can make people excited, and sometimes even violent, but free alcohol has a unique way of affecting people differently than alcohol they purchase themselves.

If you’ve never drunk alcohol before, an office party is not the best place to test your limits. It’s rarely a good idea and can often lead to regretful behavior.

If you’re unfamiliar with a particular brand, it’s best to avoid it. But if you must try something new, do so cautiously and in moderation.

Above all, drink responsibly. If you’re a heavy drinker, it’s important to have a trusted colleague who can keep an eye on you and ensure you get home safe. This will help avoid any incidents that might occur when you’ve had too much to drink.

This serves as a reminder that actions at these events can have lasting consequences, so it’s best to keep your behavior in check.

3.  Your Boss is still your boss, even at the end-of-year party

Just because your boss is courteous enough to serve you a drink at the party doesn’t mean you are now equals, or that you can address them on a first-name basis (unless that is already the existing culture).

Similarly, using alcohol as an excuse to speak to or dance with your boss inappropriately is not acceptable.

“I know of employees who are very honest in their ‘feedback’ when they’re intoxicated. Just be sure that what you’re saying doesn’t include insults,” Wamonje adds.

There is a very thin line between being honest and being disrespectful in such situations.

4. Your colleagues will still be your colleagues after the party

Don’t use alcohol as an excuse to insult your colleagues, as not everyone may be intoxicated at the party, and once said, you cannot take back your words or actions.

While the event offers a chance to socialize and have fun, it is not an opportunity to disrespect others. Unfortunately, some employees misuse these gatherings to engage in inappropriate behavior, including sexual harassment.

Remember, the end-of-year party is still a company event, and the sexual harassment policy remains in effect.

This season, go out, have fun, let loose and remember to behave yourself. Cheers to you, your family and colleagues for staying strong this year. Enjoy your party and God bless you!!!
