Bishop Johana Gaceni, a respected Akorino cleric and gospel musician, has died. His death was confirmed on Tuesday, July 16, 2025.
Gaceni was best known for his gospel song “Joshua Akirugama Akihita”, which became a household hit among Kikuyu-speaking Christians. The song carried a message of faith, victory, and perseverance.
He founded the Christian Committed Gospel Church, where he served for more than two decades. His ministry was active in Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Nakuru counties.
News of his passing was shared with the public by fellow Akorino musician and influencer Karangu Muraya, with Kenyans flooding comment sections with condolence messages and fond memories of the late cleric.
President Ruto Mourns the Bishop
President William Ruto led the nation in paying tribute to the late bishop. In a statement, the Head of State described Gaceni as a man of deep faith and strong Biblical grounding.
“May God grant the family and friends strength to bear with the loss of Bishop Johana Gaceni,” Ruto said.
“His teachings were spiritually nourishing, and he immaculately interpreted Biblical scripture for the congregation.”
The President ended his tribute with a verse from the book of Job.
“Be comforted by the word of the Lord in Job 5:11: ‘The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.’ Rest In Peace, Man of God!”
Karangu Muraya and other Kenyans Pay Tribute
Gospel artist Karangu Muraya, a close friend of the bishop, also shared his tribute online.
“Rest in peace, my friend Bishop Johana Gaceni. He’s known by the song ‘Joshua Akirugama Akihita’,” Karangu wrote.

He described the bishop as a humble servant of God who touched lives through music and ministry.
On her part, Eveleen Mitei said, “Bishop Johana Gaceni’s legacy of spiritual guidance and deep understanding will continue to inspire many. May his family and congregation find strength and peace in these difficult times. Rest well, a true servant of faith.”
Emmaus Funeral Directors Send Condolences
Emmaus Funeral Directors also joined in mourning the bishop. In a message addressed to Karangu and the wider Akorino community, the firm praised Gaceni’s spiritual impact.
“We join you, Karangu Muraya, in mourning the passing of Bishop Johana Gaceni,” read the statement.
