The Kenyan Section of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ Kenya) has named Demas Kiprono as its new Executive Director effective January 1, 2026.

In a press release dated December 6, 2025, ICJ Kenya expressed its pride in naming the human rights lawyer with over 14 years of experience as the successor to Eric Mukoya, describing him as a visionary leader.

“A transformative leader from within, Demas has already elevated our work in digital rights and visibility as Deputy Executive Director,” read part of the statement.

Citing his Bachelor of Laws degree and a Master of Laws in International Criminal and International Human Rights Law from Bangor University in the United Kingdom, ICJ Kenya expressed confidence in Kiprono’s academic standing.

“Demas has shaped regional jurisprudence through strategic litigation, notably by helping to decriminalise defamation and to challenge laws restricting civic space, online freedoms, and media. His expertise spans security sector reform, technology, and the rights of marginalised persons.”

ICJ Expresses Confidence

Kiprono’s career includes leadership roles at Amnesty International Kenya, ARTICLE 19 Eastern Africa, and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

ICJ Kenya noted that Kiprono’s work has influenced policy reforms and advanced protections for civic freedoms across the region. The Commission added that Damas has also contributed to guidelines on artificial intelligence, social media governance, and data protection.

The organization also praised Kiprono’s dedication to safeguarding rights in the digital era.

“He is a respected writer whose award-winning articles on human rights, governance, and constitutionalism have shaped public discourse for years, notably through a long-running column in The Standard.”

According to the announcement by ICJ Kenya, Kiprono’s thought leadership has shaped national conversations on justice and accountability.

The organization extended its gratitude to outgoing Executive Director Eric Mukoya for his visionary leadership and stewardship during a transitional period.

The organization pointed out that Kiprono’s appointment signals continuity and innovation as it seeks to strengthen advocacy for justice, human rights, and the rule of law, and called on stakeholders and the public to support Kiprono as he embarks on this new chapter.

“We are excited to welcome Demas’s expertise and vision as we advance our mission for justice, human rights, and the rule of law. Please join us in supporting Demas as we embark on this promising new chapter.”
