The Kenya National Highways Authority has issued a traffic advisory for motorists plying the Nairobi – Nakuru Mau Summit (A8) Road.
In a statement, the authority has indicated that there will be traffic disruption along the road and the Nairobi – Maai Mahiu – Naivasha (A8 South) Road from Thursday, July 10, 2025, to Sunday, July 20, 2025.
Further, the KeNHA has explained that the move will allow for scheduled interview surveys and data collection.
“During the data survey, motorists may be stopped to share their journey details.
“The survey data that will be collected comprises Axle Load Surveys, Origin-Destination Surveys, Camera-Based Cross-Sectional, and Turning Movement counts,” the statement read in part.
Motorists Given an Earlier Warning
Also, KeNHA has appealed to motorists and other road users to cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site.
This follows an earlier warning to motorists following a major traffic jam brought movement to a complete standstill.
The Long-Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LODCA) began issuing alerts on Tuesday, July 8, at 8:30 PM, warning of heavy congestion building up between Gilgil and the Weighbridge area.
By Wednesday morning, at around 9:30 AM, traffic had completely stalled, with no movement reported in either direction.
The gridlock is affecting traffic from Naivasha towards Gilgil and from Gilgil heading back to Naivasha, leaving motorists stranded.
“From Naivasha towards Gilgil and from Gilgil towards Naivasha, traffic is at a standstill. Use alternative routes,” the Long-Distance Drivers and Conductors Association stated.
According to eyewitnesses, the jam may have been caused by a stalled truck or intensified police checks near the weighbridge, though authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause.

Motorists Advised to Use Alternative Routes
While the cause of the snarl-up is yet to be confirmed, traffic police are reportedly on the ground assessing the situation.
Frustrated drivers and passengers have taken to social media, calling for urgent intervention and traffic management support.
The Long-Distance Drivers and Conductors Association has urged all motorists to use alternative routes where possible and avoid the affected area until normal flow resumes.
This standstill is the latest in a series of transport disruptions reported in recent weeks along the busy corridor, raising concerns over road efficiency and emergency response mechanisms.

Authorities are also yet to issue an official update or timeline for resolution.
In the meantime, road users are advised to remain calm, avoid blocking access lanes, and cooperate with traffic officers at the scene.
The stretch between Naivasha and Gilgil is part of the Nakuru–Eldoret highway, a crucial corridor for cargo transport between Nairobi and western Kenya, as well as Uganda and Rwanda.
Further, long-distance truckers, public transport vehicles, and private motorists all use the route heavily, making any disruptions extremely costly.
