Veteran Journalist Anne Mawathe has landed a new job days after leaving Reuters media.
In a statement dated Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Defrontera, an independent, not-for-profit media organization, announced her as the new company’s Editor in Chief.
“Anne Mawathe, one of the most respected journalists on the continent and one who has led teams at the BBC, Reuters, and Citizen TV, is our Editor in Chief. Learn more about her assignment at Defrontera,” read the statement.

Additionally, Defrontera expressed optimism about the veteran journalist joining the team, citing her vast experience in journalism.
“With over 20 years in journalism—including roles at international media houses like Reuters and the British Broadcasting Corporation—Anne brings the leadership and vision to turn evidence into journalism that brings change, combining traditional boots-on-the-ground reporting with innovative storytelling techniques,” added Defrontera.
On her part, Anne expressed her delight in joining the team.
“In a world where algorithms and bias render some people invisible, Defrontera is doing the kind of journalism the world needs more of—journalism that sees people, informs, and actively participates in seeking the well-being of the people,” she said.

Colleagues from the communication and media industry sent congratulatory messages following her appointment.
Angela Nguku said, “What a powerful move! Anne Mawathe brings not just years of top-tier journalism experience, but a deep commitment to telling stories that matter. Defrontera is in excellent hands. I can’t wait to see the kind of truth-telling and impact this chapter will hold.”
NMG journalist Sycilia Wakesho also congratulated Mawathe stating, “Well deserved Ann. Congratulations.”
In her new role, Mawathe will be involved in producing rigorous, data-driven content that addresses some of the most urgent public health questions, from maternal deaths in rural counties to the collapse of donor-funded health systems.
Mawathe’s Career
Anne has had a decorated media career for more than 20 years in the industry. Prior to joining Defrontera, she worked at Reuters, where she served as Chief Producer of Visuals in Africa.
She has also worked with BBC as the Africa Health Editor. Additionally, she worked as a multimedia journalist, reporting, broadcasting, and producing content in both BBC Swahili and BBC English.

Besides working for BBC, Anne has worked for notable media houses in Kenya, including the Royal Media Services Limited, where she was a reporter and producer for Citizen TV.
During her stint at Citizen TV, Anne Mawathe covered several notable feature stories, including the misery of cancer patients and the issue of underage girls being forced into early marriage.
Her feature stories earned her the CNN News Impact Award in 2014 while working at RMS.
She has also worked at Nation Media Group, where she served as a radio and TV journalist.
Mawathe holds a master’s degree in mass communication from Leicester University.
