Taib Ali Taib Bajaber is a prominent Kenyan veteran lawyer, politician, and former Mayor of Mombasa, serving from 2003 to 2006.

He is known for his work as a special prosecutor for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and gained prominence in the 1990s for defending Islamic Party of Kenya (IPK) rebels.

The lawyer is a highly regarded legal expert, fluent in English, Swahili, and Arabic.

Early Life and Educational Background

Ali is the son of the late Sheikh Ali Taib Bajaber, and his family remains prominent in the legal field.

In the linguistic heritage, he grew up in a multicultural environment and became fluent in English, Kiswahili, and Arabic.

Senior Counsel Taib Ali Taib Bajaber was born and raised in Kenya, primarily in the coastal region of Mombasa, and his background is rooted in the coastal Muslim community, which later influenced his early legal work representing political activists.

Bajaber followed a traditional Kenyan legal education path and earned his law degree (LLB) from the University of Nairobi, completing his studies between 1984 and 1988.

After his degree, he attended the Kenya School of Law to obtain the mandatory Post-Graduate Diploma in Law for admission to the bar.

He was officially admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1988.

Taib Ali Taib’s Career and Background

Admitted to the bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1988, Bajaber is a senior counsel known for his assertive demeanor in legal practice.

He was appointed as a special counsel for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), where he prosecuted high-profile cases, including one against former Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich.

Bajaber was nominated by the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) and elected as the Mayor of Mombasa in February 2003, serving until his controversial removal in February 2006, which was later reversed by the Court of Appeal, reinstating him, after ruling that the minister had acted beyond his powers. He was a prominent supporter of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) at the time.

In 1993, Ali Taib was elected the vice chairman of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), deputizing former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga.

In 2016, the legal practitioner was shortlisted for the position of chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) but did not secure the role.

Achievements

Taib Ali Taib Bajaber has built a distinguished 38-year career spanning law, politics, and public service.

In 2020, he was officially conferred the title of Senior Counsel (SC) by the President of Kenya

He has been honored with the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS), a presidential award recognizing his outstanding and distinguished services offered to the nation.

Ali was handpicked by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) as a special counsel to lead high-stakes government cases, with his notable assignment being the prosecution of the Arror and Kimwarer dams graft case against former high-ranking government officials, including former Treasury CS Henry Rotich.

The fearless lawyer is the Managing Partner of Taib & Taib Advocates LLP, a successful law firm that has operated for over three decades.

He has successfully mentored the next generation of lawyers, including his daughter, Aisha Taib Bajaber, who is now a managing partner at the firm.
