KIRAGU KIMANI

NAME  KIRAGU KIMANI
AGE  N/A
GENDER  MALE
OCCUPATION ADVOCATE AND SENIOR COUNSEL

Kiragu Kimani, SC, is a highly distinguished Kenyan advocate and the current Senior Partner at Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Mathews (HHM), one of Kenya’s most established law firms, since January 1, 2024.

He was conferred the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel (SC) in July 2020 by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, an Honor reserved for advocates with exceptional integrity and exemplary service.

With over 30 years of experience, he is a leading litigator specializing in Constitutional Law, Tax Litigation, Commercial Disputes, and Arbitration.

In his career, Kiragu has been a central legal strategist in Kenya’s most significant political cases, where he represented Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017 and was part of the team that represented William Ruto in 2022 as part of the presidential litigation.

Early Life and Educational Background

Kiragu Kimani, SC, was raised in Nairobi, where his early years were shaped by his family, faith, and elite educational institutions.

He attended Jero Primary School in Nairobi and joined the prestigious Nairobi School for his secondary school education, which he cites as one of the most significant influences on his character and subsequent career success.

In 1987, Kimani pursued his legal studies at the University of Nairobi, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB).

Kenya School of Law is where he did his undergraduate studies and earned his Diploma in Law and Bar Finals in 1988.

Immediately after 1988, he joined Hamilton Harrison & Mathews, beginning a tenure that has lasted nearly four decades and culminated in his current role as Senior Partner.

Kiragu Kimani’s Career and Achievements

The legal practitioner joined Hamilton Harrison & Mathews in 1988 as an associate and was elevated to a Partner in 1991.

After decades as a practice leader, he was appointed Senior Partner on January 1, 2024, taking over the mantle from Richard Omwela to lead the firm’s 2024-2027 strategic plan.

Kimani famously represented the Kenya Ships Agents Association in a landmark dispute against the KRA regarding VAT on services to foreign principals.

For some time now, he has been the “go-to” strategist for Kenya’s executive, having represented Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2017 elections and served as a lead counsel for William Ruto in the 2022 Supreme Court battle.

The lawyer has successfully handled high-stakes disputes for multinational giants in the energy, tobacco, and banking sectors. This includes cases involving national electricity tariffs and public procurement.

In 2020, Kimani was conferred the rank of Senior Counsel, been the highest professional honor for a Kenyan advocate, recognizing his exemplary service to the legal profession.

He is a recipient of the International Law Office (ILO) Client Choice Award for best litigation lawyer in Kenya, an honor voted on exclusively by corporate counsel.

For more than 15 consecutive years, the advocate has been ranked as a leading lawyer (Band 1) by Chambers and Partners, The Legal 500, and IFLR1000.

In the 2022 Jurisprudence at the Supreme Court of Kenya, he gained viral public acclaim for his no-nonsense delivery, where his phrase “give us back our country” became an anthem of the defense’s confidence.

He is a member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the East Africa Law Society.

He is a recognized leader in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and a regular contributor to the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Kenya Branch.
