The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner in charge of research and boundaries delimitation, Prof. Francis Aduol, has urged Nyanza residents to register as voters, as a meaningful way to honor former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking in Kisumu, Aduol encouraged residents in the region, which has historically been a political stronghold of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, to register and honor him.
As of April 24, the commission has recorded 1,876,274 newly registered voters since the commencement of ECVR on 30th March, 2026.
Voter Apathy and Political Disengagement in Nyanza
Aduol explained that voter apathy is influenced by public perception that individual votes have little impact, economic frustrations, and mistrust in the electoral system.

However, Aduol observed that Nyanza presents a unique dynamic shaped by the long-standing political influence of Raila Odinga.
According to him, some residents associate reduced political participation with Odinga’s absence from active politics, leading to lower motivation to register as voters.
He encouraged residents to view participation in elections as a continuation of the democratic ideals associated with the former Prime Minister.
Aduol also addressed concerns about the credibility of Kenya’s electoral process, dismissing claims that the IEBC manipulates election results.
“From my interaction with Kenyans, I have identified three reasons for voter apathy. One of them is that registering as a voter and ultimately voting will not add a plate of ugali on their plates. Others think because they just have one vote, it makes no difference. And the third is that IEBC is going to steal the vote anyway. But in Nyanza there’s another reason – the absence of Raila Odinga,” said Oduol.
The commsiisoner also encouraged Kenyan youths to register as voters since they form 57% of the national population so that they can vote the right leaders instead of invading the parliamnt.
