Moses Muthama, the Director of Machakos County and the only son of Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu Muthama and Commissioner for the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) Johnson Muthama, has passed away.
According to a family statement, Moses developed breathing complications on Wednesday night and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
“Moses developed breathing problems while at his house and was rushed to the hospital, where he died,” a family spokesperson said.
Leaders and residents across Machakos County have begun sending messages of condolence and solidarity to the family.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Muthama family during this difficult time. May they find strength and comfort, and may his soul Rip.”
“Too early, but it is well may he rest in peace,” said Johnny Mutemi.
Moses Muthama Appointment as a Director of Machakos County
Moses Muthama was appointed as a director in Machakos County in January 2024.
His appointment, however, raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and political favouritism, with residents expressing suspicions that Senator Agnes Kavindu could be compromised.
The public argued that Kavindu might not effectively perform her oversight role over the county head, who has reportedly appointed her son to a position in the cabinet.

About the Muthama family and Machakos politics
His father, Johnson Muthama, was born in October 1954 and served as the Machakos Senator from 2013 to 2017.
He ventured into elective politics in 2007, when he was elected Member of Parliament for Kangundo on an ODM Kenya ticket (now the Wiper Party).
Between 2008 and 2013, Muthama served as the government chief whip, and in 2013, he was elected as the Machakos Senator.
He did not seek re-election in 2017 after a fallout with his party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka.
Muthama currently serves as a commissioner in the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), appointed and sworn in in March 2023.
Agnes Kavindu Biography
Agnes Muthama Kavindu was born in the early 1960s and married Johnson Muthama, but divorced in 1983.
The couple has been blessed with several children.
Agnes Muthama Kavindu’s political journey began with her first attempt to run for elective office in the 2017 general election, when she contested the Machakos County Woman Representative seat on a Jubilee Party ticket, but did not secure the seat.

In 2021, following the death of Machakos Senator Boniface Kabaka, a by-election was held, and Kavindu won.
Kavindu was sworn in as the Senator for Machakos County, becoming the fourth woman elected to the Senate since its establishment.
As senator, she quickly became active in legislative work, representing Machakos County in various Senate committees, including the County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee, where she scrutinizes the management of county resources, and the Senate Business Committee, which plans and coordinates parliamentary business.
In 2021, Moses Muthama and his sister expressed their displeasure at their mother’s decision to vie for the Machakos Senator seat, calling it a politically driven move intended to embarrass their father, Muthama.
Agnes later stated that she had forgiven her children and that she gives them her blessings and good wishes in their endeavors.
“A lot of things have been said about my children. I take away all that has been said about them. I love them very much, and I have forgiven them, and my husband. “May God bless my children abundantly,” said Kavindu.
“I shed tears because of love, but I am a very strong woman. I don’t shed tears easily. I will deliver for the people.”
In the 2022 general election, Kavindu successfully defended her seat, once again under the Wiper Democratic Movement banner, cementing her position as a key political figure in Machakos and the wider Eastern region.
