Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) addressed allegations regarding the institution’s academic integrity.
In a statement on April 2, the university said a politician made the claims during a radio interview on March 31, 2026.
The lawmaker had stated that some students who had never been admitted to the University or studied were issued with gowns and graduated from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.
In setting the record straight, the institution has stated that no student can graduate without being admitted and having satisfied the Examiners and the Senate.
āAll students who graduate from this University apply, get admitted, register, go through their chosen courses, and only graduate once they have satisfied the Examiners and Senate,ā part of the statement read.
Additionally, the university explained that students who qualify for graduation are duly processed through the approval processes as provided for in the University statutes.
On the other hand, the University offers Open and Distance Learning, where students take classes from the comfort of their homes or areas of operation/homes away from the University.
Graduation processing is not only done for the students who attend the classes physically, but also for those in the Open and Distance Learning to ensure they meet the requirements,s according to the statement.
In addition, the institution has termed the allegations as tarnishing the image of the institution.

UnitedĀ Opposition Secretariat Mukhisa Kutuyi Allegations Against MMUST
In an interview with Radio Generation, former Minister Mukhisa Kutuyi stated that the two-year graduation program at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology had included unverified students who did not graduate from the institution.
Ā According to Kutuyi, during the graduation year, his nephew was also a graduate. Names of people who had not attended training or been admitted to the public University appeared in the graduation roll.
āAnd I can demonstrate to anybody who cares to listen that the graduation two years ago at Masinde Muliro University had names of persons who were never admitted to that University, and the first time their names were shared with the University is when they print out for graduation. They came, they got a degree, and they went away,ā Kutuyi stated.

On April 1, the CS asked the Commission for University Education (CUE) to investigate the qualifications of the graduands in the institution.
Additionally, CUE was to investigate whether the students who had graduated had been registered and satisfied the board of examiners.
