The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued an urgent traffic advisory to motorists using Molo Road following heavy flooding.
In a statement dated March 22, KeNHA advised motorists travelling along the Eldama Ravine–Maji Mazuri–Molo Road, confirming that the floods had rendered parts of the road impassable, prompting authorities to alert the public and implement safety measures.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that the Molo River located along the Eldama Ravine – Maji Mazuri – Molo Road, has flooded, rendering the affected section unsafe for motorable traffic,” read the statement.
According to the statement, the situation arose due to heavy rainfall in the upstream catchment areas, which caused a significant rise in water levels along the Molo River.
KeNHA Advises On Alternative Routes
KeNHA, in its statement, recommended alternative routes for motorists who need to travel despite the flooding.
Drivers from Eldama Ravine can consider using Eldama Ravine–Mogotio–Salgaa–Nakuru or Eldama Ravine–Kabarak–Marigat–Mogotio as detours.
Those approaching from Nakuru are advised to take the Nakuru–Salgaa–Ravine route.
The authority stressed that using these alternatives will reduce the risk to road users while ensuring continued movement in the region.
Additionally, the statement noted that traffic officials and local authorities are on high alert to manage the situation and prevent accidents.
Police officers and traffic marshals are stationed along key points of the road to guide motorists, enforce road closures where necessary, and provide real-time updates on the water levels and road conditions.
“Motorists are strongly advised to exercise caution and strictly adhere to instructions issued by police officers and traffic marshals on site to ensure their safety,” KeNHA warned.

Motorists are urged to remain patient, adhere to official instructions, and avoid crossing flooded sections of the road.
The authority also thanked the public for their cooperation, emphasising that timely reporting and adherence to guidance are crucial during emergencies.

KMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall and Flood Risks Across Kenya
The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) had earlier predicted heavy rainfall and increased flood risks across the country, with several regions expected to experience over 20 mm of rain within 24 hours between March 19 and 24.
Peak rainfall intensity was forecasted for 20–23 March, coinciding with several reported flooding incidents.
The Molo River flooding along the Eldama Ravine–Maji Mazuri–Molo Road occurred during this period, affecting motorists and prompting urgent traffic advisories.
KMD highlighted that the Rift Valley, including areas around the Molo River, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Nairobi, and the Lake Victoria Basin, are particularly vulnerable to heavy rains and potential flooding during this period.
Residents and travellers in these regions have been advised to take precautions and stay updated on weather developments.
